Did I watch the same games as everyone else. I felt that those 4 yr vets Prince and Gipson were both scrubs they both ran into each other costing us turnovers. Giving up plays for big yards or 1st downs. Cyprien can at least come up and close gaps and tackle. If you want to keep them fine but not worth anymore money that what they make now. Made no outstanding impact. I will give them maybe new scheme and will be better next year but no more money until prove they are worth more. Just like an average job and raise. 

So, you're basically basing the majority of your opinion off of one bad non communication by Prince and Gipson running into each other?

 

Yea, they should have communicated better, but it still doesn't change the fact that they both read the play exactly the same and ended up in the same exact spot while judging the read/pass.

 

It was nothing more then bad communication, by players who were playing in their first year together, that's it.

 

If they were together for 2-3 years and made that same communication mistake, I can definitely see the complaint. This is not anywhere close to that though.

I think there is a chance that he gets a decent offer from a contender, so he may chose to leave, unless he loves Jacksonville. I like Amukamara as a player, I was a big fan of his coming out of Nebraska. If we happen to lose him, however, this is a really good corner draft.

He's good enough for a bad secondary to make him their #1. He'll command around 10 million. We have enough. Might as well do it.

I'd absolutely love for Prince to get a new contract.

 

He isn't a star (few are), but as a #2 he's good. He probably wont wow you much and he'll definitely get beat a time, or two. That's just this day and age of NFL football though. Everybody is going to get beat eventually, regardless of just how great they are.

 

I don't believe he'd demand a huge contract, but a modest contract over maybe 3 years? Give or take.

The above link shows the current average salary for CBs this year. Josh Norman being the highest at $15m. Jimmy Smith for the Ravens is #10 on the list at just shy of $10.3m

 

Chris Harris and Kareem Jackson come in at #19, with $8.5m

 

Prince is currently #32 on the list, making $5.5m this year.

My guess would be something in the $7-10m per year range?

 

After a quick check at the 2017 free agent corner list, there aren't many good young corners scheduled to hit free agency, so I think his value will be inflated a bit more than usual. I'd guess an AAV somewhere in the neighborhood of $6.5-8million, perhaps a 4 year $30million deal. I don't think his injury history will play a big factor on the years or total dollar value, but will on the guaranteed money.

  The injury history would be my primary concern if in the Jaguars position.   Maybe a heavily front loaded type of contract might be the best way for the Jaguars to proceed.  Especially, since the team is expected to be in great shape salary cap wise for 2017.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see them throw the big $$$$$ book at Prince, but I'd like to see them throw a generous amount at him. Ramsey, Prince and Colvin on the inside, they make up a very good CB trio.

 

We'd all love for them to lock up Prince on a home town discount, but I wouldn't be upset if they over paid him a little bit just to keep that trio together.

 

I know there's other guys that need to be paid this off season, but having 3 absolutely solid/good+ CBs is huge in this pass happy NFL.

 

 

 

   If the Colts get their Offensive Line situation straightened out,  having a very good trio of CBs should pay huge dividends for the Jaguars.   The Colts certainly have the combination of a QB and big play WRs to make lives miserable for the opposition if they can protect Andrew Luck.    With Tennessee already having their long term QB in place once he's recovered from his recent injury and all of the draft resources they have available,  their passing Offense could easily be much better in a couple of years.

We have a top 5 pass defense this year with a very inconsistent pass rush. We rarely get beat by big plays like we have for the last decade.


Gipson and Amukamara are definitely not scrubs. Gipson hasnt been what we hoped but hes been solid.

Gipson has a lengthy contract, he has plenty of time to become the INT leader again.

Amukamara to me has been average and i couldnt justify paying anymore then 7 mil per year. He is decent in coverage and slightly lacking in run support/tackling .


To play both sides of the fence though he is across from Ramsey and any smart QB would pick on Prince over Jalen. I've noticed that with Jalens rise over the last few weeks that Prince is being targeted at an alarming rate.


Similiar to Brian Williams getting targeted a ton when Rashean was in his hayday.

Looking at that list i would choose Walters over Benn despite Benn's ability on special teams as a gunner. Gunners are nothing to find but sure handed , intelligent route running and durable WRs are tough to find.


Amukamara again should be back for continuity in the scheme but at a decent price.


Of the RFAs Shatley and Thompson should be back.

A. Gipson and Prince ran into each other one time, while both trying to make a play on the ball.  Sure, it was a bad look, but it wasn't exactly game breaking.  The Int would have effectively been a fair caught punt.

 

B. Gipson hasn't really been tested all that much this year.  Teams haven't really gone down field on us all that often, and much less so to his side, given Cyp has shown to be a blatant liability in coverage.  Gipson hasn't been a world beater, but he's been far from "scrub".

 

C. Prince has been exactly what you expect a CB2 to be.  A solid coverage guy who's occasionally going to get beat.  He's not Ramsey, and he's not Patrick Peterson... nor does the team expect him to be.  He's the CB2, and he's a quality CB2 at that.  I wouldn't go tossing 10+mil a year at him, but he's going to get a decent paycheck this offseason, and I'd prefer that be with us.

 

D. Cyp can close gaps and tackle?  The guy has a history of taking terrible angles and misses more tackles than anyone else who's ever worn a Jaguars uniform.  He's lead NFL DBs in missed tackles once already, and I'm pretty sure he's leading it again, if not, he's close, this year.  If there's ONE starting player I hope does not get resigned, it's him.  He's just not good.

Gipson is a big reason why our Defense improved.  He took away the big play down the middle of the field that had plagued us for years, teams don't even try it anymore.  Ramsey Erases one side and Prince is serviceable and should be back.
