Tom Coughlin
|
Quote:Im not buying the reports that he wants full control. Terrible way to leverage yourself into a head coaching position. Dont buy every rumor hook line and sinker. The Bills and Jags are interested in Coughlin, well, The Bills are on the verge of hiring a guy and when that rumor came up about Coughlin wanting full control, they pretty much distanced themselves from him. The Bills are not giving him full control, their GM right now is pretty good. If that rumor is true, then he has played himself out of two head coaching positions and the season hasn't even finished. And I doubt he goes to some team like the Browns, I think The Bills are pretty much ready to compete for the playoffs and its in New York which is very appealing to him, and Jacksonville is his second home where he built his legacy here as our first coach, also very appealing. If that rumor came from Coughlin, that was a pretty stupid move, doesn't make sense and hes not in a position to leverage himself. The Giants he didnt have full control and that could have been his downfall as Jerry Reese wasnt great. Theres already reports saying he dislikes Bortles. You seruously think at age 71 hes just going to jump into any coaching situation available? I think its more likely then not. Im not biting on wvery rumor, but a 71 year old that got acrewed in his last gig...it surely wouldnt surprise me. Still dont think wed hire a search firm if we were fond of Coughlin and vice versa. TC and Mr Khan have had lengthy meeting..again wouldnt call it an interview...but sort of a getting to know each other, gauge interest deal 2:12 PM - 29 Dec 2016 Didnt see that earlier. Not sure if he knows much either, but news nonetheless.

You seruously think at age 71 hes just going to jump into any coaching situation available? There have been plenty of coaches that have coached in their 70's. Coughlin didnt get screwed over, he won two super bowls with them. His time was up, he was there for a decade, it was time to move on. Your making it seem like Coughlin would be here for a decade. I think the Jags are wanting an experienced coach that can flip this team around quick, I truly believe the higher ups think this team is better than what they were this year. I think they want someone who will install discipline and a winning culture and get this thing turned in the right direction. They want to compete, they want fans in the seats, they want a winning atmosphere. Its not all about winning super bowls, its about being in the mix, competing, talking about winning your division, talking about playoff spots in December. The fans have gotten so used to losing that our season is over by November and we are already talking about the offseason. Then we dream about Super Bowls, lets be realistic, lets get this team competing first. Coughlin for 2 to 3 years in the town where he was the first coach and is loved is a great way to end his stellar career and also give the city something to cheer about, which we have not had since 2007. I think ideally, Coughlin would groom a coordinator to take over. Hiring a search firm is just bringing in a third party to give you a different opinion. Khans in charge of this coaching search, writings on the wall. Read between the lines.

Im actually starting to believe theres some teeth to the speculation that Dave Caldwell may be out of a job come Monday. Who knows, we wont know till next week, but there could be a scenario where Caldwell gets fired, Coughlin becomes the VP of football operations and hires a coach and takes charge of the personnel. Brent Martineau shot that report down. Alfie Crow literally said several times its purely speculation by a guy who has zero sources. If Khan knew he wanted Coughlin, theres zero way we hire a search firm imo. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Quote:Brent Martineau shot that report down. Alfie Crow literally said several times its purely speculation by a guy who has zero sources. It is speculation, but its still a good article and while Im not the biggest Alfie Crow fan, I do believe hes got a point here. Shad Khan has repeatedly said he knows nothing about football. He prefers to be the guy behind the scenes making the brand better. He literally sat back and watched this disaster for 4 years, not till two weeks ago, did he step in and stop it. Shad Khan isnt just going to hire Coughlin because Coughlin, hes going to be thorough in the coaching search, get multiple opinions of which direction to go and go from there. Third party searching firm is there to give him a better idea or an opinion of the state of the Jaguars. Theres a lot of scenarios that can play out and it will be interesting to see. Obviously you and I disagree on Coughlin, and who knows, maybe he wont come here. But its a real that theres mutual interest and a lot of things can happen. Its speculation by Alfie, but its a thought out opinion and I happen to think theres some truth behind it, though theres no facts at the moment to back it up.
I don't want Coughlin hired again.
Why? Because I don't want to see Bortles's ineptitude get Coughlin fired too and sully Tom's good name and those memories of the seemingly very far, far away Nineties when the team actually mattered. Quote:Or he interviewed before or after the practice. Our team practices?

I think ideally, Coughlin would groom a coordinator to take over. I think you're off base and connecting dots that just don't go together. I highly doubt Caldwell goes anywhere and I am starting to doubt that Coughlin is in the running to be our coach. From the tweets and insider info going around it does sound like he wants full control and he's not going to get that here. In my opinion it would be a mistake to give him full control as well. Tom was a great coach, but in NY, for the past couple of seasons the Giants just didn't have it. Did he lose the team or is he just starting to lose his edge? I know people love Coughlin, but the Giants let him go for a reason and as good as you once were, doesn't mean you stay that good.
Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

This is the most plausible of all the farfetched scenarios. But I think Caldwell would stay and duties would be divided between Coughlin and DC

question with tom though is can he beat the titians? I tried to find his overall record vs titians on the net. I couldn't find it. I do know in 99 he couldn't beat titians.

Quote:I think you're off base and connecting dots that just don't go together. If he does want full control, he has painted himself into a corner. First, he would have to go tell Khan that he needs a new GM. If he does that, he can't then go to Dave Caldwell and tell him he's okay just being a HC. Because he will have already told Khan that he thinks Caldwell sucks. So he can't apply for full control, and then say he'll settle for just HC. Quote:After the way the Jags won on Saturday, ending their 9 game losing streak and finally winning their first game, this season, in front of the hometown fans, against the hated, and tied for 1st place tacks, Marrone looked like one of the best head coaches out there today...............................................................................................................But it was only 1 game. The awesome part was that he picked apart the Titans film and game planned to beat them. If he does the same for the Colts and the Jaguars whoop them too, I have to think Marrone is a very serious candidate. He appears to have a mind for the game, and I was particularly impressed how he owned the time outs near the end of the game. He totally knows exactly what to do at the end of games. Is Marrone the best candidate out there? Now that's hard to argue, but I tell you what... you can do much, much worse.

I haven't seen a single legitimate source that has said anything regarding Tom Coughlin wanting "full control" of anything.
I've seen a bunch of talking heads and forum posters SPECULATE that he does, based mostly on his having full control here during his first ride. We need to slow down with calling speculative comments facts here. There's been ZERO indication of anything concrete, other than Coughlin met with Khan, then met with Caldwell (and presumably Khan/Khan/Mark). As for Tom's age... Hey, let him come in, coach for 2-4 years, whatever he's able to do. Let him turn this ship around, get us back into the Playoffs, and ride of into the sunset a hometown hero... and when he retires... well... We'll have the most attractive HC Opening in the league if we don't already have someone on staff that's been groomed. I don't know about you guys... but after a decade or so of mediocrity to absolute suckitude... I'll take 2 or 3 years of success and worry about the rest later.

That's kind of my take on Marrone as well. He's not a sexy choice. He's probably not the 100% BEST OMG HC available. After Gus... he sure seems like a real HC though. It'll be interesting to see what happens Sunday. Granted, it's week 17, the Colts have nothing to play for and we beat them earlier in the year under Gus... but another statement-type game is going to make the conversation inside Everbank very interesting with regards to Marrone. If Marrone was the choice, I could support keeping Wash as the DC, but I'm kind of feeling like Hackett should be replaced. Let's face it... he was the QB Coach, and we saw what happened to Bortles this year, and when he took over OC duties, it's not like we really saw much improvement until Marrone took the helm. Maybe the combination works... I don't know... I'm not high on Hackett though.
