Year 4 of the "rebuild"...Dave Caldwell's talent took us to 3-13

Times like these are when the TWABS (Trolls Without A Brain) come out of the woodwork. The OP is a prime example. Never around when things are going well. Never willing to actually provide anything substantial to back their position.

Those who have been around a while remember TMD. He was actually one who would back up his stance and debate his position. The TWABS don't have the capacity to do that. They just do a driveby troll job and move on to the next one.

They are not worth the time nor response of any respectable poster.

What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

Quote:The cohesion is on the coach, not the GM.  You saw some great things in the first half today.  Ngakoue with his ninth sack. Fowler got another sack. Grant on a long TD run. Koyak continues to impress, with another TD catch. It was Marrone who took his foot off the gas.  And I do think this team could go to the playoffs - because I think this team has more talent than any other in the division. But we need the right coach.

Agree with this. The talent is there, with more on the way. Coaching has just been that bad this year.

There's a reason the Jaguars were so easily beating the colts at one point, and it's talent. It's there on the field.

There's also a reason the team ended up losing, and it's coaching. In game management is better under Marrone in some respects, but still can be much better.

I will say, though, with someone like Ivory in the game it might be possible the Jaguars grind out that last first down and the colts never get a shot to win the game. Still I didn't like how Marrone handed the 4th and 1/2 yards to go as well as a few other situations.

That 'prevent' defense at the end was infuriatingly bad situational football.

I agree with all points of this post.   ^

What I also like was the Bortles was able to throw the ball without relying on Hurns  A-Rob or Julius Thomas. Lee has been a blessing. I hope we keep Walters. And I still think Koyak will be a very good TE.

Agree. The roster is far more talented than the record would indicate, and I think that's what will ultimately make this job appealing to some good candidates. We need to get that hire right.

All three of those decisions were widely lauded at the time they were made as good moves. It's easy to be a message board GM in hindsight.

Caldwell also drafted Lee, Robinson, Linder, Telvin Smith and Luke Bowanko in 2014. Hurns was also in 2014 but he was undrafted so I'll give that a push.

2015 had Fowler, AJ Cann, and Green. Yeldon is a push.

Then in 2016 it's Ramsey, Jack and Ngakoue. Sheldon Day also counts.

Every single major producer on this team outside of Posluszny was signed or drafted by Caldwell.

I can forgive the draft busts, but hiring dopey Gus and keeping him for 4 years can't be overlooked. Why not clean house completely now instead of half assing it now and cleaning house completely in 3 years?

GM can't fire the coach without the owner's approval.

Ok, so because something seems like a good idea at the time, it means it can't be called out as a horse [BLEEP] idea in hindsight?

Gus was considered one of the hot coordinators ready to take the next step. We weren't the only team pursuing him at the time. Again, your ability to ignore facts in proper context has us all in awe.

Tough to say. As a person who bought into Caldwell's approach, I feel like I'm having second guesses. Sure, theres talent there and I absolutely agree better coaching is needed. But lets not forget who hired that coach, lets also not forget who has been drafting the past 4 years. Jockel, Cyprien, Bortles, Yeldon, just to name a few. I dont think Gipson made an impact at all this season, I guess you can say I'm cherry picking but theres some pretty big misses in that span of 4 years. Starting with the head coach.

Dave Caldwell probably will be here next year, but his job security absolutely should be under question.

Quote:that should be all you need to know that he should be fired right after this game like we did Gus.

#newyearnewGM

I pray we find a GM with actual football knowledge and the ability to find talented coaches, staff AND players, because Dave has failed us.

HE and HE ALONE is the reason we are stuck at the pits of the league. He has failed to "rebuild" this franchise.
If you can deny the talent on this team and comparing the record then I suspect you are going on emotion alone.  The past two games alone tell us all there is talent on this team.  Caldwell can pick the talent the HC has to use it.  The talent is there.

So you are saying in the end it was a good move to hire Gus, because it seemed like a good idea at the time?
