Marrone new HC

Quote:If the team is a dumpster fire, it won't be 3 years before a change is made.

If the team struggles next season and at least is competitive, you give them another year.

A 3 year deal or an extension doesn't guarantee anything, because we don't know what will happen. It's just an indicator where the front office plans on going.

Please...... the team has been a dumpster fire for years under Gus and Khan refused to fire him. What makes you think that kind of mentality would change now?

Well in my mind there were 2 large problems.

1. Gus. He's gone. He should have been gone sooner. I really like Marrone, whether you do or don't, we will see if he rights the ship.

2. Khan. He said himself he doesn't know much about football. He should have fired Gus a long time ago, as has been said a ton of times. Now Khan has hired coughlin to take care of tough decisions and things like that. If Coughlin was vp of football operations already, no way Gus lasts as long as he did.

I think having coughlin is the final piece needed for a good system of checks and balances and duties delegated.

Will it translate to wins? Maybe. But it shows that Khan is dedicated to the success of this team.
Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

1. Yes, Gus should've been gone much sooner. That is why I have no confidence that our losing mindset will change. If Marrone fails, I see Khan giving him just as much time as he did Gus.

2. If you know nothing about football, why buy a football team? That's just asinine. I know nothing about soccer. If I was a billionaire, I certainly wouldn't buy a soccer team, because I want to be successful and since I know nothing about the sport, common sense would tell me I would be put at a disadvantage.

You say the moves show Khan is dedicated to the success of the team, but I see a man who has absolutely NO clue what he is doing.

Maybe not NO clue, but like I said, Khan has admitted as much and now he has coughlin to take care of that. Coughlin is the guy in charge of football decisions now.

Khan won't be the one giving Marrone more time, it'd be coughlin. Coughlin is going to be in charge of making sure the team has a winning culture.

Quote:Marrone and Caldwell don't get two years, forget the extension. Caldwells on a one year prove it status, that's why the staff isn't changing. Anything less than a competitive season and coughlin purges the entire organization in 2018.

Khan said results will show themselves in time. There gonna get the full 3 years you can refuse to accept that if you like but he gave one of the worst coaches in recent memory 4 years so there gonna get the full 3.

Quote:I think most of the reasonable fans are fine with Marrone but don't understand why we didn't fire gus sooner and give Marrone more games to show us what he can do.

Marrone walked out on his last head coaching gig. Don't you think it was prudent for the FO to get a feel for the guy to find out his commitment to the organization before they hand the reigns over to the guy?

Why waste your time on a guy who may turn around and walk out on you at the end of the season?

@SI_NFL The Jags haven't had a winning season since '07 so their big hire was all about ... continuity. (by@ChrisBurke_SI) https://t.co/jNJBxe0GCM? https://t.co/81cKSh7079

Do you consider every person who leaves their job as walking out? Every person who retires as walking out?

The bills management is a mess. They were trying to force Marrone to play guys he didn't want to play. He had a clause in his contract that allowed him to cut ties amicably. With ownership infringing on his ability to coach, he took advantage of that clause in his contract.

All that aside, Marrone has been with the Jaguars a good amount of time now, and firing Gus a few weeks earlier would have made no difference to seeing what Marrone's commitment to the team would be.

If they were that concerned about him walking on the team, they should have never hired him.

I mean would we really be that worse off if Marrone went all out and won 8 straight games, but then decided not to be the next Jags HC?

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

If this front office truly thinks Gus was the one and only problem, what does that say about them for keeping him for four years?

You left the man in charge of the football team to run it into the ground for four years. Then make ONE change.

I don't necessarily fault Marrone for doing what his contract allowed him to do, which is leave in the event Ralph Wilson no longer owned the Bills.

However, his relatively brief tenures at just about all of his stops are mildly concerning, even though he was never fired from any of them.

Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

Here is my problem

1. Gus wasn't the problem they retained him for 2016 because we were X number of players away.

2. Season goes immediately in the tank and they are embarrassed on National TV. They stay the course even though they have the guy they like as an assistant head coach. To get a head start on the "process"

3. 2 Week Audition shows one exciting game and one choke job

4. Team hires a search firm and claims no one is tied to Bortles - but we go all in on the guy

So basically the team needed all of 2016 to realize what the rest of the pundits, fans and think tanks around the league knew in 2015. Now we are going to do the same fan dance only this time it will be Blake Bortles fault.

I seriously hope they transplant a steel spine in Bortles and work on his mental toughness because it is going to get ugly.

Death of the Franchise - November 29, 2011

Fans deserve better. Thanks for all the good times too many are in the past.

Exactly. This franchise is so poorly run.

Quote:We're both speculating on how things went, I just think it's more likely that Tom turned down other interviews because something else was already in place and there was a request by the team for info not to be leaked so it wasn't. I think that's more likely than other teams not even giving Tom an interview, even if their interest in him was muted which in my opinion it shouldn't have been. I find it extremely hard to believe that 5 other NFL teams aren't interested in even just interviewing a 2 time Super Bowl winning coach that's available who has had success everywhere he's been even if it's just to get an opinion from him on their roster. It's a pretty big stretch and it's why I don't know that your timeline is accurate. Also, remember Tom met with Khan without Caldwell present. That's a pretty big statement being made right there. The pieces to the puzzle are all here. There's a much more plausible explanation than what you've put forward.

Unless the word around the league is that Tom is senile and we're the only ones that haven't heard that. Then we're probably in some trouble here.

After giving the topic more thought, it wouldn't surprise me that Tom Coughlin was reluctant to be a HC on the West Coast because his family and roots are on the East Coast. This was the impression I got last winter when the 49ers opening was being discussed before they hired Chip Kelly. If this is the case, that would have eliminated 3 of the 6 openings: 49ers, Rams, and Chargers.

John Elway seemed to narrow down his choices with the Broncos before the interview process began.

Buffalo, the only other opening, is probably the only mystery of what occurred. Coughlin likely would have jumped at the opportunity to coach there if everyone was on the same page, including GM Doug Whaley. The impression I'm getting though is the Bills are looking for a current Coordinator to be their HC. With a clear chain of command in their organization. In essence, a vast contrast compared to the Rex Ryan era.

Bagging on the Jags is the only thing that brings him joy. Otherwise, he is dead inside. Let him have his 7 minutes.

Yeah, I mean youu think Coughlim, who is now more powerful than our GM, had nothing to do with Marrone being the hire? The guy that is now the head guy of everything football?
