I gotta tell you.

There were a boat load of die hard charges fans.

Only empty seats were behind jags bench.

That city has a bunch of PISSED off and hurt fans

Spanos just paid $650 million to move the Chargers to LA, it would be naive to think anyone wouldn't pay the $100 million or so to move the Jags out of Jacksonville. Having said that, nothing Khan has done has shown even the slightest hint of him moving the team. As for profitability; prior to Khan becoming the owner the Jags were barely breaking even, with the London game the Jags are now profitable in Jacksonville but the whole issue is moot since the NFL would never allow any franchise to open their books in such a manner as to proof they were losing money.

To your first point, it just shows how unreasonable Spanos was being. He's asking for the taxpayers to foot the bill of his new stadium, but magically finds 650 million to relocate the team, in which he still has to find/build a stadium to play in or share a stadium with the Rams? He could've paid and built the stadium himself, and he gets to keep all of the profits in doing so, If he really wanted to stay.

we packed 65k fans in everbank this year ... those packers, broncos, and vikes games sure were crowded

I always laugh at how people overestimate visiting fans.  Urban myth has a couple of games packing 60K Steeler fans into Everbank on a few occasions.  There were a lot of Bronco fans (and a lot of Vikings fans at that game) but Jaguar fans easily outnumbered visitors 4 or 5 to 1.

He made a token effort to build a new stadium in San Diego but a deal where the city would paid $1.1 billion of a $1.5 billion and the city (as well as the voters) rightly told him to sod off.

I don't know if I buy this Spanos never wanting to stay hypothetical.

 

I know there has been a need for a new stadium in San Diego for quite some time.  Jack Murphy/Qualcomm/whatever that stadium is now called is almost as old as I am, if not older.  I know he had been trying to get a new stadium for a long time, and the L.A. market has been available for 20 years.

 

If he simply wanted to bolt (no pun intended) to Los Angeles, he could have negotiated his own stadium deal and done it himself years ago.

 

While many find the public financing of stadiums repugnant, and while recent history has shown some recent examples of nearly completely privately financed stadiums (save infrastructure like road, sewer, etc.), history has shown that in most instances where cities let their stadiums become dilapidated, they end up losing the team.

 

Fortunately Jacksonville has been largely proactive/cooperative in helping to make Everbank field a top facility.  They need to continue being proactive in stadium issues, including preparing for the day the stadium needs to be rebuilt/a new stadium needs construction.

All the chest thumping and posturing aside, San Diego and San Diegoians lost their team.


They lost part of their identity. They lost part of who they are and they'll never get it back.


If you've been there, you know they spend tons on an awesome public transit system (which one destination, the stadium, is now irrelevant) the awesome downtown area (gas lamp) and a lot of stuff directly associated with quality of life. A lot of things you can't put a hard value on too.


Like having a team. Part of "US" "OUR TEAM." That's now gone forever.


Everyone didn't do enough to save "THEIR TEAM" from the politicians to the team, and yes, the taxpayers.


At the end of the day, their stance results in only them, the taxpayers, having a huge void that'll never be filled.

Thank you! I have no idea when this epiphany came DF, but I support it fully. Our lease was never as iron-clad as people thought. What seemed like a big penalty, no longer is. As long as nobody else tries to locate a franchise to London full time, we will be fine (as long as we keep up our stadium). But the moment we A. let the stadium become dilapidated, or B. another team starts talking about moving to London and we lose our 'home games, we would be in hot water.

 

Jags fans have been doing their part, but this is just the way the world is right now. The risk of losing our team will drastically increase over the next decade if the city sits on its hands with the stadium. So if a mayor cares about the long term viability of the J-ville Jaguars, they need to be having this conversation about our stadium now. I think the moment we start winning, new stadium talks will come shortly after.

I agree about Khan, he isn't Spanos or Kroenke who were gunning to leave. I think he doesn't mind keeping the Jaguars in J-ville at all, and would probably prefer that. But that being said, when another team starts talking about going to London if their stadium demands aren't met, thats when we will see how committed he really is. He wants more London 'home' games for money and market, and I am okay with it as it buys us more time. Threaten that golden goose tho, and we might get different treatment. In ten years Jax better be building a new stadium with a much more 'iron clad' lease if we really want the jags to stay. I would say a billion dollar penalty would be a real 'iron clad' thing at this point, but 500 million might be enough with all the relocation fees he would have to pay.
