3rd is a nice position to be in.  Chances are one of the first two (possibly even both) will blow their pick on a QB reach, leaving better players on the board.

They probably figured Schaub would get close but not enough to pull it out, which is pretty much what happened. McNair must have been nervous though in those last seconds. Probably radioed down to Schaub before that last INT that a $50,000 Christmas "bonus" was his if he threw one away, which judging by the zero Texans in the area, he clearly did.

What is the talent gap between Matthews as it compares to other OTs in this year's draft?

Is Barr seen as the last premium pass rusher or is Matthews the must have LT...Rams could get screwed again by trading back which is why I think they will go Matthews @ #2 leaving Clowney or Bridgewater there at 3.

I think pick 3 can be valuable no matter what. Clowney is a guy teams would be willing to trade up for.

I've noticed some big boards that didn't include him previously, now sliding him in at 33 , 35 , 38...

 

I wouldn't be surprised to see him climb from there into the 10-15 range on many boards  (whether it's warranted or not.)

 

Bortles might be good, but late risers scare me. I'd rather go after the consistently high rated player rather than one that all of a sudden rises on boards like a stock market bubble.

Teams later in the draft may also be looking for potential developmental guys, especially if they are high on them. I'm just speculating of course. But even if they are not in the first round we still pick 7th [39] in the 2nd round which in my opinion is not ideal. There is plenty of time for the QB starved teams to get our guy. I think while we have a good spot at 3rd overall, our 2nd round pick is kind of limiting in terms of getting a good QB. After the 2nd things start get shaky in regards to QB, unless you think lightning strikes the league twice and the next Russell Wilson is sitting there.

 

I don't like having the #39 pick either. A trade down to a team that picks before us in Round 2 would be ideal if we miss out on Teddy.

 

I do not think teams that want to develop quarterbacks are really quarterback-starved. That term is only for teams that have no good quarterbacks on the roster.

If there is 1 guy that sticks out for them and he is available at #3, pull the trigger. If there are 4-5 QBs that the Jaguars are equally interested in (Carr/Bortles/Manziel/McCarron/Fales/Boyd/etc.) then take a difference maker like Barr because at least one of them should be available in the 2nd.
