McShay's new mock draft: OJ Howard at #4 (merged threads)

(This post was last modified: 03-15-2017, 01:38 PM by Teal Time Radio.)

Is he Gates? Can he score from anywhere on the field like Gates? Do they command a double team on him like Gates?

The best TE in NFL forever despite what media thinks Is Antonio Gates.

And if his production is not close. He does not deserve pick 4.

IMHO, he's the crown jewel in an exceptional class of tight ends. Before we give up on Blake, we need to complete his weaponry and solidify the OL. This would help him and the running backs considerably. A potential all-pro TE and an improved OL could turn this beleaguered offense around.

LOL. How?

Also look around the league. Gates, Witten, Delanie, Olsen, Martellus, Graham...lots of TEs helping their team post 30 and beyond.

Our best RB of this generation can't find a taker late in the FA process at 31 years old. Nor can the 30 year old RB who blows away the entire NFL history in yards per carry.

Let's take the dude who can help now and also help later.

Still, no TE has ever been drafted at #4 or higher.

"We need a punter on this team."

"This punter is the best that's out there."

TEs just shouldn't be valued as high as the other positions. Yea you can have the best one but what will that give you? Patriots won the SB even after the all mighty Gronk went down. It's great to have one but this team needs pass rushers and more defensive help. It almost always does.

This is predicated on Thomas being gone and our FA taking CB/S off the board early. If Thomas is there grab him for sure.

Howard would be better than taking the gamble on bad athlete bad injury Allen.

True.....but this is a game where just one mismatch can turn a game around......plus open up opportunities on other parts of field.

I think Thomas or Allen need to be the pick. I know how you feel about Allen so no need to go into why you hate him.

It's a TE guys. A TE. Howard may very well be good but at #4? When elite level defensive talent is still available would be a mistake, IMO.

Good point.  But lets say the Jaguars don't draft him at 4, where would he end up falling to?  What is the justification for drafting him that high?

I don't hate Allen, if I were to have to bet on an undersized, bad athlete becoming an outlier out of the last few drafts it would be him.

If we were picking like 10-12 and Garrett, Thomas, Lattimore, Adams, Hooker, and Howard were off the board he'd be as good as pick as any I think.

The patriots succeeding in spite of missing a player just isnt reflective of the rest of the league. Nobody is the patriots, so trying to do things in a manner they do is stupid.

And gronk has been essential in some of their biggest wins as well, ignoring that would be wildly unfair.

Trade back and pick him, I would not pick a TE at 4

From a talent stand point, I'd argue that he can score in more ways than Gates.

He's been mocked as high as 5 up until people finally started pushing him to 4.

Yep, I've seen him to the Titans, Jets, and Bills.

Comparing the shelf life of TE's to RB's is unfair.  You're talking about a player who touches the ball 25-30 times a game versus 10 at most in a TE.  Granted, having a quality TE is important.  But, give me an elite RB over an elite TE any day.

The good thing about this whole scenario is that there are numerous players being linked to the Jags at #4.  Thomas, Allen, Adams, Hooker, Fournette, Cook, Lattimore, and now Howard.  I think it gives you a good poker face.  Unfortunately, Coughlin has been known to "reach" so I hope he's leaving the draft to Caldwell and his staff.  I think Howard would be a reach.
