Quote:What's the practical application of the bench press to a real game for a running back?

Again I've been told I was wrong, but my presumption was that it's a measure of strength, and that for a RB a good bench might suggest he has a good stiff arm and that he shouldn't be prone to fumble because he can grasp the ball tighter.

Not sure if there is a correlation between chest/tricep strength and fumbling.

Generally speaking, if you're really strong there, you probably work out a bit and are strong all over your upper body.

The thing about the combine bench is that the weight is always the same. You're moreso seeing a display of sustained strength, and not personal power.

There is never going to be a time when a running back needs to stiff arm someone 22 times in a row, but if these guys were instead benching for single bursts of their own top end power, that would be a better indicator of how strong their stiff arm could be.

There are a variety of different muscles that would contribute to ball security. Moreso biceps and shoulder strength that would that would allow someone to hold onto the ball more securely. You're pulling the ball in toward your body, not pushing it out like a bench press motion.

I honestly think they should update the drills.

Let's say a player is trying to hide an upper body injury, and he only does 5 reps on the bench. That would definitely raise some red flags.

So it has its pros and cons.

I don't think it has anything to do with fumbling and stiff arming. Lol.

I'm pretty sure there are less complicated ways to check that stuff haha

Also really bad idea for a guy to even do the bench if he has an injury. It can complicate it.

Yeah it would be a bad idea. But if a player is trying to hide an injury, the bench press will expose it.

I'm one of the ones that finds his bench press concerning. It's a measure of strength in my eyes, and he seems lacking. He's going to be a good player if he stays healthy regardless. Needs to get stronger, reminds me of Danny Woodhead.

Pass Blocking is all I can think of, but 10 reps is not concerning. 6.57 3 cone shuttle says it all.

No offense but I think that's a lazy comparison. They aren't the same size at all and are different types of players

Needs to get stronger based on what film of him playing?   I could see someone saying "he needs to get stronger" if something showed up on game tape, but the game tape doesn't reveal any weakness in his play.

If someone can break Barry Sanders' all time single season all purpose yardage record, in a major conference, I don't want him to do anything he hasn't already been doing.  Getting all pumped up in the upper body isn't going to do a thing for him.
