Lamp Or Bust

Quote:Does anyone remember that linebacker Gene Smith traded for in a draft-day trade?  I just remember Brian Sexton kept saying Gene Smith was a "friggin' genius", and a few years later I can't even remember who he was.

I have no idea. My memory sucks. I can't even remember what I had for breakfast this morning.

He was targeting Sean Lee in the draft. Didn't get him.  Traded a fourth for Kirk Morrison. (raiders)

He played the next 16 games. Nothing special.  Then Gene signed Poz.  Morrison, ironically, went to the bills.

I'm always amazed when people can remember stuff like this. I can't. I did too much partying in college and killed a lot of brain cells. Now, I regret it.

LOL  - I'm the same really. I remembered "Morrison" but looked up the rest.  There are a few posters here that can rattle this stuff off w/o googling though.

I'm not one of them usually.

Laurent Robinson!  That has to be one of the worst FA signings.  I remember seeing highlights of him after he was signed and kind of thinking he doesn't really do anything.

Just like Kampman - he was hurt.  And he was saddled with Blaine Gabbert.

He'd have been a decent signing w/o the concussions and the qb drought.  He had to retire due to the concussions in Jax, BTW.  He had 4 of them in 2012.

Yea, I do remember the concussions.  I think he's that guy that somehow managed to hit his head on a random patch of concrete on the practice field.

In order for us to trade back far enough to get Lamp at a reasonable position, the other team would have to give up too much. I don't see anything doing that for anyone in this draft. Maybe a couple trade downs? Either way, the average position for a guard in the last 10 drafts is 25th. Warford was the highest at 10th and he's a bust. Out of the highest drafted guard, DeCastro in 2012 is the best (Zietler was 3 spots behind him).

Drafting guards high isn't reliable.

San Francisco @ 28th (2016)

Detroit @ 28th (2015)

Dallas @ 16th (2014)

Tennessee @ 10th (2013)

Pittsburgh @ 24th (2012)

Philadelphia @ 23rd (2011)

San Francisco @ 16th (2010)

Buffalo @ 51st (2009)

San Franciso @ 29th (2008)

Baltimore @ 29th (2007)

Do you think that Feeney and Lamp will be gone by #35?  Do you like Dawkins at that pick as a consolation?

Would you consider trading back into the late first round to land Lamp?

(just curious where folks stand on all of these ^ )

I'd pick him up in the 20s or at 35, but it doesn't seem like we need to draft a guard high to get a good one.

I'd give up a 3rd to move back into the first if he's still there by 25th.

Brandon Scherff says hey. The past really doesn't matter when evaluating these guys. I wouldn't take one at 4 but just saying that Lamp or Robinson may be an elite guard in a couple years and one may go high.

While Warford was not my first choice as a FA OG, he is far from a bust. Heck, the Saints just gave him 4 yrs at $34 million with $17 million guaranteed. Teams don't give that kind of money to OG's on their second contract if they are considered "busts." I would consider Lamp on par with Kelechi Osemele and Feeney on par with Kevin Zeitler. Dion Dawkins is comparable to a Jermon Bushrod or Ali Marpet. After Dawkins, there is a considerable drop though.

The one early player in Jags history that I will always remember is Harry Colon. His name "tickles" me.

For those talking about trading back, another slight possibility is team could trade back multiple times and end up with multiple 2nd and/or 3rd rounders.  They could maybe pick up a DE,TE,G,QB, and RB in the first 3 rounds.

Quote:No. Trade down from #4 and add a 2018 first rounder.
Quote:It'll cost us a lot more than our 3rd rounder to move up and get Lamp. That will likely cost us our 1st round pick in 2018. No deal.
So ezpz just trade back and get one of these teams handing out 2018 1st rounders like candy. But if we want to target our guy and it would cost a 2018 1st rounder then it's no deal.

Funny how much less attractive giving up quality picks looks when the tables are turned.

Opposite for me.  I 'membered Lee, but forgot Morrison was the consolation prize.
