I don't think so. There was a somewhat similar late rise for Bortles on boards in 2014, IIRC. Like Blake, Webb has that prototypical size that some GMs still see as a must at the position.


He's got that coach's kid pedigree with solid mechanics and above average football IQ. His "tape" shows he can already make all of the "game manager" type of throws with timing and accuracy consistently. He has a <a class="bbc_url" href='https://media.giphy.com/media/3oKIPip7P18tarAQUg/giphy.gif'>strong arm and a pretty accurate deep ball</a>.

He'll just need time to get his decision making up to speed in the league and probably no small amount of work at reading NFL defenses. Lots of his decisions were made for him in Cal's offense. Though he had a bit more freedom at Texas Tech as a freshman and sophomore.

He does have some accuracy issues at times, but nothing crazy.


If a team has the luxury of a veteran QB with a year or two of starting ability left and wants to groom the next guy - they could conceivably use the late first round pick on this kid.


I think his value makes more sense in the late second or early third, but I see why scouts might like him enough to gamble earlier.

Yes. I saw that.  But it only states that Webb himself claims that someone from multiple teams has told him he's a first round prospect. 

 

That's different than ten GMs saying they'll draft him in the first round. 

 

Scouts say nice things to prospects that don't always equate to an actual pick in the draft and draft prospects say things to elevate their stock before the draft. That's all that's going on in that article/interview.

It doesn't matter who told him or didn't tell him.  But let's just say that there actually were 10 GMs from the NFL that all told him he was a first round talent -- that does not mean any of them have any intention of using their first round pick on him. 

They paid him a compliment - not a commitment.

 

You also must consider that this is a young man with a brief chance to sell himself to 32 potential employers and he's saying anything in this interview he can that might help drive up his perceived value.

30 passes isn't much of a sample size, but yeah that doesn't look great. Who counts as the best? How many players are we counting throws against? I'd like a little more info.
