A few people on here has never seen McCaffrey play. He might be the best back in this draft between the tackles. He just does differnt than the power backs. He uses his great vision, patience, and shiftiness. Not to mention probably has the best acceleration out of all the top backs. Hes slippery like yeldon, patient like Bell, can catch the ball out of the backfield and acceleration like Bush. Not to mention he is a elite punt and kick returner

Not to mention he set Barry Sanders record that lasted 30 years, his dad was an All Pro 3 time SB champ, grandad on moms side was a Duke track legend and his whole family is track stars and athletes

People just see him labeled as best pass catching RB in the class or "could be a starting WR in the NFL if he wanted to" and assume that means he isn't adept at playing between the tackles. 

 

Exactly 60% of his carries were between the tackles. You don't BS your way to a 4.98 YC/A between the tackles with that big of a sample.

So 67% of the time, fournette faced 8 men or more in the box and still created almost 5.5 yards per attempt but KY still pretends like fournette needs a "runway" even though he posts his own evidence of disapproval. Hilarious.

His line provided him big holes to run through. Not really a knock on LF7 but it's just you didn't get to see him make quick moves as soon as the ball hit his chest like other backs. I still like Fournette tho but we need to fix this line.

McCaffrey is my pick for rookie of the year, but I don't compare him to Fournette, because they are so totally different.   The success of either one of them will depend on the system he goes to.   Even though I love McCaffrey, and I got on the McCaffrey bandwagon before anyone else, I'm not sure I want McCaffrey to come to the Jags.  I don't think we run the right system for him.  

Fournette is a solid option, but he doesn't really get me excited about the running game.  When I watch what McCaffrey can do, and how versatile he is, that's a back who does capture my attention.  He has great feet, terrific balance, nice field vision identifying and hitting the gaps, speed to break the big plays, and he's a strong receiver out of the backfield.  Add to that the fact that he can be your punt return guy on top of everything else, and it's hard not to like him.

 

As rock solid as Fournette is, this team needs someone with that ability to break the big play on any touch.  I just don't see that with him.  I do see it with McCaffrey, or even with Cook.  Both guys have that home run potential.

Some of it is probably conference bias.  Some of it is also based on the amount of televised game coverage each player received.

 

The team upgrades with any of the top 3 backs in the draft.  But, sometimes the experts get it wrong.  They project guys higher than they should be while downplaying others who might actually wind up being better.  As long as we hit on one of these guys in the draft, I think the team sees significant improvement.  But, I tend to think McCaffrey would be the best option for the Jags.

Short answer is that there probably isn't a GM that would take McCaffrey over Fournette. so while there may be people here want to bash Fournette, the league disagrees.

If you want a guy to run between the tackles and run people over, you take Fournette. If you want to throw the ball to your running back, you take McCaffrey. Which one you want depends on what you want to do with your running back. I think New England would prefer McCaffrey over Fournette, because of their offensive system.


I don't know who the Jaguars would prefer, because I don't know what kind of system they will be running. I get the feeling they want a between the tackles power back to run over people, so I get the feeling they will prefer Fournette.


They are two completely different backs who do completely different things, and which one a team prefers would depend on what kind of offensive system they are going to run. Fournette is the kind of back who will get 20 to 25 carries per game. A sledgehammer. McCaffrey would best be used getting 12 carries, 10 catches, and various punt and kickoff returns.


That's why I am saying, when people compare McCaffrey and Fournette, arguing over which one is "better" it's apples and oranges.

I read a few weeks ago I read that we'll be running a version of the air coryell system. It varies depending on where you're at on the coaching tree but it's basically a lot of deep balls with an emphasis on a strong running game.

We know his per carry yardage up the middle is average, and we know his per carry yardage out of shotgun is well below average, so we can surmise that his solid stacked box numbers come from the large number of toss/sweep plays that avoided the box entirely. He had an insane 11.something AY/C on tosses. This is where using some nuance can be helpful. Of course Achilles wouldn't think to try that though. 

 

Nothing in his profile suggests that he will fare well against stacked boxes in the NFL, cause he ain't beating NFL caliber athletes to the corner on tosses like he did in college and everywhere else he's average to below average.

You look at how a true power back just blows through tackles and escapes. The thing with McCaffery is that he'll escape that same exact situation, only he does it with finesse... not power. He got innate moves that I've never quite seen before, and then like I've pointed out, if when he breaks free the guy goes turbo.

I see more home run potential in Fournette than I do with Cook. Fournette has the balance to stay on his feet and keep going when he's hit, and if he breaks free he's got that home run speed just like McCaffery and Cook. Fournette is incredibly fast for such a big RB.
