Jags Trading Up For Thomas?

#21

Quote:I don't think you draft a player that high, just so he doesn't start.

That high of a pick needs to be an instant starter on the team.
The DLine is the only time I disagree with you. They rotate so often that Thomas would be sure to get a lot of snaps next season. It's not like a QB not starting.

A Forbes article mentioning the Panthers talking to SF about number 2
Bump

"Matt Barrow of the Sacramento Bee reported that the Carolina Panthers have been very vocal about their interest. Barrows slightly hedged his position by stating “there is nothing currently in the works”, but with the Panthers sitting at the No. 8 position in the draft themselves, they are in a position to put together a package that could move them up six spots in the draft.

Lots of talk/rumor about Carolina (picking at No. 8) trying to obtain #49ers' No. 2 pick. Told there's nothing currently in the works.

— Matt Barrows (@mattbarrows) March 29, 2017"

Lol at lots of talk and rumors, but nothing currently in the works. The draft has turned into the biggest rumormill since the Cold War.

I also think it's VERY likely the 49ers would try to move out from 2 and let a Carolina or Jacksonville come up for Thomas.

completely baseless and vague.

also the only player i would trade up from 4 for would be garrett. too much talent sitting there at 4 to waste picks and move up for someone else.

Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

You'll struggle to find anything off Twitter that's not baseless and vague regarding the draft during this time of year. Anything off the internet really.

We may all hate it, but the NFL hit the nail on the head by moving the draft back. It's NFL news or mock drafts or whatever, 24/7, 365. And I'll be damned if we didn't all end up playing along. There's gonna be 47 more mock drafts on here before the draft, and we all know it. It's becoming more and more like a March Madness bracket by the year.

Unless Garrett goes past Cleveland and we get a steal to move up to 2, I highly doubt it would happen.  Giving up that much doesn't make much sense IMO.

I can't imagine the trade offers SF would get if they passed on Garrett. I imagine the whole top 10, including us, would be inquiring as to the cost of moving up for him.

Edit: they being the brownies

100% agreed, so basically very very little chance we would move up in this draft.

Is Thomas so good it would be worth giving up our third or second round pick? (I would think that's the minimum SF would want) I think he is good, but not that good.

I think he's going to be very good but I wouldn't want to give up a 2nd round pick for him. There will be a lot of good players still available in the 2nd and I wouldn't want to miss out on them.

When the next inevitable trade down thread is started remember how it's been unanimous that it's not worth giving up a day 2 pick to move up in this draft, especially for a non QB.

That's how the rest of the teams are almost guaranteed to feel too.

Very deep draft at many positions other than QB.

Honestly if it's between that and a RB at 4 I'm all for it if they think Thomas is gonna be that good. 3rd rounder though, no way on the 2nd.

Jags may indeed trade up, but it won't be for Thomas.

I agree

In fact, the more I think about it the more I like the idea of trading down if possible

I'm not convinced Thomas is good enough to be worth giving up picks for. Get him at 4? Sure. Give up a 2nd or 3rd rounder? I don't think so.

I agree that the charts paint a bleak picture regarding the value we'd have to give up. In lieu of him falling to #2, I think the Browns would have to feel confident enough in their arsenal of picks in '17 and '18 that they'd compromise and accept something closer to #2 value for the first spot.
