I'm still lost, or that is, if I'm reading this correctly, this is ludicrous. The 4th picks will ALWAYS cost more than the 5th pick.

You really think Jax would charge an extra 6th/7th rounder if someone is offering Tenn a 1st/2nd for the 5th?

I agree that is what he is saying, and I agree with the premise. If the Jaguars realistically covet a middle of the round player, then I would be fine with them taking under "typical" market value if it means:

 

1) Getting the player you want

2) Preventing the Titans from accomplishing a trade that they want

3) Recouping additional day 2 picks

Not exactly settle for less in terms of market value, but that is possible too.

 

If the Titans ask for a first, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh plus a 2018 first and third, teams are going to look elsewhere. So we could ask for less than them and still come out with over-market value for the 4th pick.

Let's say the Browns offer their 1.12, 2.1, 3.1 to move up to 1.5 so they can select player X. But the Saints offer their 1.11, 1.32, and 2.42 so they can select player X. So the Browns counter with adding a 5.1 this year and 2nd rd pick in 2018. The Saints do not want to match that offer but want Player X. So the Saints offer the same package to the Jaguars that they offered to the Titans. 

 

 

Also, different teams value different picks. Some like to stock future picks, some want something in return this year. Some would rather receive 2 3's and 4 instead of a 2 and 4. Different teams prefer quantity of picks as a whole over high picks. If the Jaguars and Titans have different philosophies on the value of picks, a team's offer may be different for each organization. It takes more than simply looking at a chart because there is no standardized value chart.

This discussion is borderline ridiculous. For starters, the Titans are actively looking to trade down so it's not like they're intent on getting utmost value. I see the Jaguars looking to trade down for the right price, but not even with the same intent as the Titans. If someone wants the #4, they're going to pay for it.
