How real is the possibility of Watson at 4?
|
This could just be draft fatigue setting in but I saw a video of Prisco saying he could be in play at 4. We know the Jags brought him in for an interview and they must decide on Bortles' option soon. If Tom isn't sold then this could quite possibly be a surprising pick, right?

I have hoped he is the pick from day one. This is a QB league first and foremost and I truly believe Watson is going to be a good one.

I would not say it's impossible. But I would say it is unlikely.
If I had to list out players by probability of being the 4th pick, I'd list him behind Thomas, Allen, Fournette and Hooker.

I think a QB is a very real possibility.
When a new coach and/or a new GM take over, unless there is already a Peyton Manning or Big Ben already on the roster, they typically want to bring in their own guy at QB. I share in Trav59's assessment that Watson could be a good QB. Whether TC, Caldwell and Marrone think so is another matter. Whether they think Bortles is salvageable is another matter. Worst to 1st. It's impossible to tell what's going through Tom and Dave's minds right now, but I think there are a couple of things which make it unlikely.
1 - It might make sense to play out Bortles final year, in the hope that he can be saved and use the valuable pick on another position of need. 2 - If they are planning to move on from Bortles, it would make more sense to wait until the following draft, which most people believe is a better crop of QBs.
In 2014 they passed on Khalil Mack to draft Bortles, I don't think it's a good idea to pass on players like that to take a chance on a QB. Bortles played well enough in 2015 to ward off a high draft pick for another year.
I think there is zero chance of QB at 4. Why even have Bortles around at that point? It would just create stupid controversy. That does not mean they won't pick one later. Just not a top 5 QB.
As an aside, none of the QBs in this draft deserve to go top 10 imo. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
If there's no QB taken before four, I wouldn't be opposed to taking the top QB in the class.
Whether or not that's Watson is another debate (I do not believe he is.) And what we might do with the pick is yet another debate. It could be a tradeable pick after the selection is made. Or... it could work out as Blake's replacement. Which, would be again, another debate. I don't see it as likely, but there might be scenarios that would support the logic.

If they take the best available QB at 4, it wouldn't shock me. In this case, they don't pick up Blake's option. They let the #4 pick sit behind Blake and learn the game -- until Blake inevitably self-implodes during the season. Then the rookie finishes the year, taking his lumps, and Blake signs with another team next year.

Not gonna happen this year. We need a premium RB and TE, as well as some solid lineman. Bortles will have another year to solidify his fate. I say we should get all that we need this year, besides addressing a starter at QB, and prepare to draft/sign/develop whomever will be in play for next year. By then Blake's arm will have deteriorated more, and we should be solid at every other position.
If we drafted Watson at 4, he might need some time to develop, and we then get mediocre play from the QB, plus the need to get a star RB. Get the star RB now, while you have a chance. Otherwise, we could go 8-8 this season and get a middle of the round draft pick next year, and not have a chance to get what we need.
Does the organization have a backup plan in case Blake starts throwing wounded ducks?
Quote:Does the organization have a backup plan in case Blake starts throwing wounded ducks? Trade for Eli Manning as a short term patch at season's end? It certainly doesn't seem like there's one this season, unless the draft or a free agency move (other than re-signing Henne) tells us differently.

Please no.
Look, the guy has all the stuff you want in a QB just like Borltes, but his arm is not NFL caliber plain and simple. It's a weak arm by league standards... he throws way too slow... and he's erratic as heck with accuracy issues galore. After Gabbert, we really don't need that. If you must have a QB early, the guy is Trubisky. He's raw but it looks like he's got it, only the Jaguars haven't even talked to him so I'm thinking QB is really not an option at all. I honestly cannot imagine this regime being ignorant enough to draft Watson.

He's among a few first round prospects like Njoku who just might find himself slipping to #35. Caldwell isn't taking Cam in round one because from that point on he will forever be compared to Gene Smith as far as who reached harder for a first rounder... Caldewell for Cam or Gene Smith for Alualu? The prospect of being Gene Smith 2.0 should keep him well clear of that route.

Watson could very well be the pick. But that does not mean Watson would start day one nor year one. It could spell the end for Chad though. And good riddence. Blake would still be the starting qb. But will now know shape up or ship out.
