What is Jacksonville's QB strategy for the Draft
|
Quote:If Watson falls to the second round I think you consider taking him. But other than that I think you see whats there in the 3rd round. I don't think a QB pick is guaranteed in this draft. Bortles will start as the starting QB in 2017 and will be is final chance to prove he can start in this league. The draft isn't deep enough to wait until the 3rd We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Dak Prescott went in the 4th. I doubt the Cowboy expected he was going to do what he did last year. There is always a diamond out there. Its all about finding it.
Jaguars | Pacers | Purdue | Team USA
Quote:The draft isn't deep enough to wait until the 3rd Probably not... My gut says Peterman will be a top 60 pick, and the Jaguars are sitting on the outside of that at #68. Webb, Peterman and probably Kaaya as well (I see the Bears taking him at #67) are likely off the board by #68. The next guys on the list appear to be Evans and Cobb, but I don't see them going prior to round four.

Give Bortles this year. Next year will be much better choices for quarterback. None this year are any better than Bortles was last year.

Quote:Let's start by taking a look at what the Jaguars have done at QB. So far they've brought in three... Mahomes, Watson and Peterman. Mahomes and Watson were brought in for a private visit, but Peterman they've done a lot of work on. They first talked to Peterman at the combine, and he was the only QB they reportedly talked to at the combine. They later brought him in for a workout... and then most recently they brought him in for an official private interview. I have to think they really like him. There are a bunch of rumors that Chicago could take Watson at three. So at 4 would have tons of trade offers. If that was the case to jump above Jets.

The Jets? The Jets want nothing to do with Watson. If they take a QB, it's gonna be Trubisky. They really like Trubisky.
I'll guarantee Watson is not drafted in the top nine picks, and I doubt he goes #10. The Bills, from what I'm seeing, only want Trubisky, and if they can't get him they'll try for Peterman at #44. The Saints at #11 would want Mahomes over Trubiskly but are probably taking McCaffery at the spot before trying to trade back up for Mahomes, so the best realistic chance for Watson would be the Browns at #12 or the Cards at #13.

I'm not in favour of picking a QB, because to get anyone worth the risk, we would have to use a first or second round pick - and that's a major investment for a player who may sit on the bench if Bortles works out.
There is an argument that this roster is looking pretty good and that with an average QB (instead of one who makes game-crushing mistakes) we would get a good number of wins. And so drafting someone like Watson, Mahomes or Kizer would be a move which could make sense. But I think any one of the QBs this year would be just as big a risk as playing Bortles, if not bigger. How about, Josh Rosen, Mason Rudolph, Josh Evans, Luke Falk, Baker Mayfield, Jake Browning. Can't say they'll all be brilliant, but it's a more attractive group than the QBs around this year.
Quote:How about, Josh Rosen, Mason Rudolph, Josh Evans, Luke Falk, Baker Mayfield, Jake Browning. How do we know that though. Last year people were mocking kaaya as a top 10 guy after the draft. Until they're pricked and proded once they start to the draft process we don't know how they'll translate. Also if we wait and Bortles is a bust we have to start the process all over again, and forcing a young QB in or starting a free agent QB. We need to stay ahead of the 8 ball and get a guy this year. You're absolutely right, we don't know. But all the indications have been that as a group there is more talent there than the QBs this year, so there is a good chance some will work out. And yes, bringing in a new QB could involve dropping him in at the deep end, but there are plenty of examples of good players who hit the ground running and don't need to sit on the bench for a season.

If he's not though, what if we did trade back with Cleveland (if the offer came about of course) and picked up their 33rd pick or 52nd pick and another later round pick. We could go Howard at 12; Mixon at 35; and Peterman at 52 (if he makes it of course, maybe flipping 35 and 52). This I could get behind. However, I cannot get behind the people picking QB at 4 or even in the 1st in general. We're just passing too much talent at more needed positions in my opinion. I like your viewpoints on this though!
Let's Get Em!!!! Go Jags!

That said, I truly hope they don't go Mixon in round two. Some teams have the culture to absorb the controversy that surrounds him, but he'd only be a distraction for the Jaguars. I can see Mixon going to the Bengals, Raiders or Packers later in round two. Peterman makes plenty of sense at #52 provided he gets by the Bills, but I keep thinking the Bills fail to get him round one and end up taking Peterman at #44... I just really see this happening unless the Jaguars take Peterman at #35. Knowing they have the #52 they might hope that a guy like Dawkins or Moton is there and just take Peterman at #35.

We still have Brandon Allen. If Bortles falls flat this year, we can stick in Allen and see what he can do. If he doesn't work out, the Jags are likely looking at another top 5 draft pick, in a good draft for QBs.
This year, I would prefer a defensive player with the first pick--maybe Adams at safety, or Allen at DT. Or Solomon Thomas if he's available. Then I would get Mixon in the second. I just think all these teams lusting for QBs this year are chasing fool's gold. DeShaun Watson threw more interceptions than Bortles did last year. No thanks.
Best thing the Jags can do is pair Blake with a outstanding RB or another defensive piece to improve a top 10 defense.
Worst case scenario Blake stinks it up and Jags grab their franchise QB in 2018. But the difference will be that hypothetically our rookie QB in 2018 will be in a great position for success with a great defense and solid running game
Best the Jags can do is pair Bortles and our RBs with a quality o-line. That should be the goal of this draft as well as some depth on defence. The last FA and drafts we addressed the offence and then the defence. We have not fully addressed the O-line since the rebuild started. Time to address it even if some have to be developed.

We've continually missed on the limited number of picks we've spent and FA hasn't been too kind either. I posted Caldwells history a few weeks ago of draft picks and signings of OL since he took over..it's quite depressing. The offense doesn't improve until the line does (and a competent QB). |
