<p style="color:rgb(40,40,40);font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">a guy like tim williams is an impact rusher.. still dont understand our pick.. we want a backup to campbell?  there are many guys we can get to be backups.. why are we drafting for backups when our starters just previously won 3 games last year?

<p style="color:rgb(40,40,40);font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">

<p style="color:rgb(40,40,40);font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">this is a classic jaguar pick, ive been nothing but positive this draft, but this pick strait up on paper sucks, SUCKS.  I hope he becomes great and proves me wrong, but this is dumb

Smells more like a Tony Khan analytics pick to me (also Illinois connection)

Looking at Smoot's stats he has only gotten better.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawuane_Smoot

Quote:Smoot played in seven games as a true freshman at Illinois in 2013, recording eight tackles and one sack. As a sophomore in 2014 he played in all 13 games and had 33 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
[2] As a junior in 2015 he started all 12 games, recording 40 tackles, eight sacks and three forced fumbles.

I mean, that is constantly stepping up your production. He is really raw and learning behind Campbell is huge. I'm gonna be the lone wolf and say I like this pick. Caldwell says Smoot is going to put on weight to be in the 270 area.

Brlynjag, yeah, but smoot is cheaper than aluau, and they both do the same thing, just stay still or go horizontal at the line of scrimmage

From Scout.com:

Quote:Illinois career

An unheralded recruit out of Groveport, Ohio, Smoot chose Illinois over Indiana and several non-power-five scholarship offers. The high school track star was forced into early duty due to a poor roster at Illinois. He bulked up about 35 pounds as a sophomore -- despite a torn elbow ligament -- and showed some flashes as an underclassmen LEO position -- a stand-up pass rusher -- in Tim Banks' defense.

Smoot broke out his junior season, totaling 40 tackles, 15.0 tackles for loss, 8.0 sacks and three forced fumbles. That production created some offseason buzz that Smoot could be a first-round prospect in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Smoot had a solid senior season -- and was a team captain -- under new head coach Lovie Smith but did not put up the gaudy numbers most had hoped. Smoothad 56 tackles, 15.0 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks. But he was a consistent disruptor in the backfield and attention to him helped teammate Carroll Phillips break out on the other edge.

Smoot would have benefited from a redshirt season but was the Illini's best pass rusher since Whitney Mercilus and has proven he can play with his hand on the ground or as a stand-up pass rusher. His versatility should help him stick in the NFL for a while, and he has the ceiling as a solid starter.

Expert breakdown

"A strong, base, 4-3 end with the strength to stack the corner and enough agility and pass-rush skill to generate some edge pressure and move the pocket. Left evaluators consistently desiring more after a sensational junior season that placed him in the first-round conversation, though has athletic tools to work with and eventual starter traits." - Nolan Nawrocki, NFL Draft 2017 Preview

I'm reading in many interviews that a big change in Smoot's senior year under Lovie Smith was fewer reps and more walkthroughs to save their health. Since he was moving up from bookending with Jihad Ward the prior year to primary pass rusher, I can see the fewer reps, smaller body weight, and more focus from offensive lines limiting his effectiveness.

He also seems to already understand film study from one of the interviews which is a good trait to already have and may hint that he is somewhat of a football junkie. I think that is the key. If he puts in the work and maximizes his strengths, he could overcome the limitations of the ceiling scouts have pegged for him.

I just mentioned this to my son. How a stadium all calling out 'DREWWWWW" can sound like "Boooooo!" I even gave him a Moose Johnston example from the 90's.. "MOOOOOOOOSE!"

He just looked upon my philosophies dumbfounded and unpaused 2K, turned to the screen and started chatting with his online buddies again. Livin in da future. Attempts at salvaging anything from yesteryear are futile. SIGHHHHH!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say TC knows more about football in his sleep than anyone here has ever known, and give Smoot a chance.

What? Your kidding right? Those D-Lines in New York COMPLETELY lacked for talent.

Especially that one dude.  What was his name? Stressful? Stetson? Swanson??? Something.. Michael? or other?

Feeney was still out there and we need a LG, I'm scratching my head on this one.  We've poured the most draft picks and $ into a D-Line in recent years than any team in the history of the NFL.

Oh I'll give him a chance... but that doesn't mean I'm excited about the pick.

My only real beef is that we have a very real need at OG and Feeny was sitting there waiting for us. I'd have preferred that pick.

Cam Robinson still defines this draft for me. We DESPERATELY needed OL help, so getting him is huge in my book. I just wanted to see us double down.
