Pick 110: Dede Westbrook, WR, Okalhoma

Quote:Not a fan of this pick. I get that hes a great talent and it was value in the 4th, but this is a troubled person. Hes got all sorts of baggage on the side. He hangs out with the G's, he cares more about what hes doing off the field than on. I was stunned what I read on this guy. Some scouts reported that Mixon's character is better than this guys. They say he has a short circuit, hes nice one moment than a monster the next. Hes had multiple domestic abuse altercations.

We missed on some talent in the third and fourth. Just not on board with Dede, I hope he proves me wrong. But I am not a fan of the selection.
In 2012 and 2013. Charges were dropped and hasn't had any issues since. Don't read everything you see on the internet.

When he's taking kicks and punts and deep balls to the house everyone will forget and be cheering. Can't wait.

This is a throw piss at the wall and see if it sticks. If it doesn't..he's flushed.

I agree , he sounds mega douche baggish. IF tough coaches like a Marrone and TC put a serious boot in his piss, maybe, this guy can redeeeem himself.

His upside is huge. Heisman finalist?

He has one hiccup, piss can him and move on.

Remember when TC wanted Lawerence Phillips?

Didn't get him and " settled" for Freddy T.

So TC will take chances. Some work, other don't. He just flung the dung at the wall at this one.

With that logic, Joe Mixon never hit that woman either because legally, they reached a settlement. As far as Westbrook goes, his baby mamma most likely had the charges dropped both times. Doesnt make too much sense to potentially ruin the life of the person who's your gravy train for 18 years for each child now does it? Even if hes a scumbag.

Just because he plays for your favorite football team, that doesnt mean hes exonerated from his past. A talent like that didnt drop to the 4th round because him and a few buddies got caught smoking pot on campus. Go look up his record, go see what the scouts said about him. Not too pleasant.

With that being said. Sure, everyone deserves a second chance. And what matters is the Jaguars are willing to give him that chance. I hope he proves me wrong, but hes got a reputation. Whether you want to believe that or not.

Maybe we think Luke Joeckel is going to come back and be a pro bowl caliber Guard.

No pain, no gain.

It also makes sense in a custody battle to make the other person look like the bad guy, doesn't it?

Whether you want to believe it or not, the club did their due diligence and are comfortable with the pick. They also made it abundantly clear he is on a short leash.

http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/ou...c9081.html

Prefaced by it was apparently written by an OSU grad and somewhat of a homer. So the bent is skewed. The facts presented though are very odd. Unfortunately, I could not get any other sources for some of these. While he was not charged for many of these, the situations and stories are very familiar to a number of the spousal abuse patients I have treated in the past. It is hard to know who is telling what truth, but these are a lot of "alleged" incidents to overlook.

You know, life happens. For one it was his wife and it happened at home... For another as a couple they've move passed it all... For another, it's not on tape... not that any of this is an excuse per say, but it's different from hitting some girl you don't know in a crowded bar and having it all on video for all to see.

That said, what is it about OU and the violence among players there?

He's not totally exonerated. The Jaguars brass has made it very clear to him that if anything like that happens again they won't hesitate to cut him.

I disagree. Just sweeping domestic violence as "life happens" underscores the enormous issues regarding sexual violence in the US. As if it is simply too hard for us as a society to truly look at domestic violence, rape accusations, and other situations. As if it is just too complicated to create a way for the victims to be heard without fear of reprimand and better cared for. As if it too difficult for those accused to receive a fair trial, proper criminal proceedings, and get appropriate treatment they also may need.

Also to say that this is just football or I don't care because is my team just perpetuates a society that feels too uncomfortable to deal with these issues honestly and fairly. Sure the NFL and sports have gotten mildly better approaching these issues in the past few years. But it is not enough when consequences hinge on the existence of a live video or guilty verdicts from a criminal system poorly designed to deal with these types of crimes. It creates situations where public perceptions spiral out of control to create villains and assign blame not based on what actually happened. It also allows for people to manipulate the system to ruin others lives like in the Duke lacrosse saga.

Also for the Westbrook situation, what if the exact allegations existed for your business partner? neighbor? physician? wife's physicians? children's teacher or sports coach? your children's best friends parent? Would be you as easily brush it aside then? Would you be able to forget by having a one on one conversation with the person and say he sounds matured now and that whatever happened is behind him?

You could say he is just trying to continue his profession and he should not be prevented from that. But how many professions allow a person to make millions of dollars and immediately vault them into the top 1%. Why hold people who end up becoming heroes and role models to many children to a different standard than we would anyone else.

It's all water under the bridge... ancient history. He's paid his dues.

His wife and the NFL gave him a clean slate,.. so should we.

In Caldwell's draft wrap presser he mentioned that the league adding in 10 compensatory picks at the end of the third round "screwed with" the Jags' fourth round selection a bit.

I wonder in Jonnu Smith was in the plan for the fourth round before the tacks nabbed him.

I suspect they will bring in some UDFA and guys cut from other teams when they have to start reducing their roster size, but the best ones usually dont get cut

Good, and I think its fair to trust the front office over a fan like me. I personally am against the selection, but I hope he proves me wrong.

Considering they got a LB a round later, it might have been Kendall Beckwith they were targetting in round four.

This is A-Robs replacement IMO if A-Rob struggles or wants more than hes worth when it comes to resign time.

I am so glad the my life's journey has not been predicated on mistakes that I have made as naive and reckless 19 year old.

Regarding football, reports of Dede's talent remain consistent...

Positives: Adequate height with big hands for his size. Proportioned body. Has gotten much stronger over the past two years. Explosive speed that won’t get tracked down. Exceptional quickness. Very good burst out of his cuts. A good leaper with great body control and high-points the ball. Will give up his body to make the play. Exceptional after the catch with good field vision, niftiness, and toughness. Great ability to track the deep ball and cradle rockets. Very good hands. Plucks, tucks and rarely lets the ball out in contested situations. Tremendous potential as a route-runner. Shows consistent effort as a blocker. Coaches at every level he’s played rave about him. Teammates love him. Has reportedly matured. Learned the importance and embraced weight training for the first time from Sterling Shepard.

Negatives: Below average size. Naturally lean and will never have an ideal height to weight ratio. Lacks arm length. Lacks a great catch radius. Strength and power will always be a weakness. Not a red-zone threat. Needs to improve as a blocker...

Outlook: Dede Westbrook is one of the most talented [receivers] in this class ... brings great speed, quickness, focus, consistency and toughness to the table.... Westbrook is nearly identical to a young Marvin Harrison in every way on the football field and has great potential. His value is in the top half of the third round.

I agree with his value being early third. When I was doing my mocks I kept ending up with Dede being something like the first pick in round three or soon after so it makes plenty of sense where he went. The Jaguars said they had him rated quite a bit higher, and I'm sure without the troubled history part his value would be at least one full round higher.
