You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I don't think you can draw that conclusion about what the front office thinks based on how this transpired.  If they had picked it up before the draft, it would have been more of a clear vote of confidence.

There's one of two things to read into why they waited until after the draft to do this.  They either wanted to feign interest in a QB to the rest of the league, or they did actually have interest in at least one of the QBs in the draft if he were available when they picked and he wasn't.

 

I still think letting him play for his NFL career this year would have been the wiser choice.  We have a catastrophe scenario now if Blake has a season ending injury in pre-season or early regular season play.

Or they didn't have to pick it up till after the draft, so they just didn't do it till they had to. It was hardly a secret that we were going to draft Fournette, everyone and their brother saw it months ago.

Did they pick up his option? Yes

Did they draft another QB? No

 

Hes got a clear vote of confidence for this year. What he does with it is up to him, but as far as competition goes they are giving him all the opportunity right now.

This shouldn't be a surprise. 2 things will come of this:


1. Blake improves and we sign him to a long term deal (team friendly hopefully). His 5th year would be at a discount of $18 million I believe.

2. Blake remains Blake and is released and we use our high 1st rounder next year to draft Darnold, Rosen, etc.

Here's what I see.  Caldwell has put all of his eggs in the Blake Bortles basket.  I know he just signed a new 3 year deal, but don't be surprised that if Blake struggles and we move on from him next year, that we also move on from Dave, and let Tom also assume his role for the last 2 years of his contract.

I'm definitely okay with Dave and Blake being married together for now. I'd like to see a clean sweep if Blake doesn't perform up to 2015 standards. I think he'll have a stronger run game and be asked to do less. However as we get deeper into games and the season he will be the guy in the fourth quarter that we can have balance with. Obviously that assumes Fournette is going to deliver the knockout punch.
