Blake Bortles 5th Year Option
|
Quote:I'm definitely okay with Dave and Blake being married together for now. I'd like to see a clean sweep if Blake doesn't perform up to 2015 standards. I think he'll have a stronger run game and be asked to do less. However as we get deeper into games and the season he will be the guy in the fourth quarter that we can have balance with. Obviously that assumes Fournette is going to deliver the knockout punch. So your ok with another losing season than cause thats what we get with Blake at QB. He is what he is. I believe there were no QB prospects actively in the Jags' raider otherwise they would have made moves. They had the position and arsenal to do a lot.
I still feel that Blake Bortles is the most talented QB the Jags have had. Definitely the most fearless slinger in its history; needed in today's pass oriented game. It's just crippling how negatively he has produced, fueled by the miscues. Hopefully this added confidence by the FO aids in transforming him into a reliable starter capable of engineering stacks of Ws with his team. A sustained Bortles, Robinson, Fournette QB-WR-RB trifecta on O could much welcomed. Otherwise, back to the board, I'd lament that.
Success is a journey, not a destination. Go all out Mighty Jaguars.

The Front Office must have gotten a hold of that Pass that Bortles released on Twitter last month !!!

One thing keep on noticing is the sudden change of Bortles is our man,. To not necc meaning that. Since Coughlin been here. No one is crowning bortles anymore. Not Dave nor Doug.

They stuck to what they said all along. Blake's the QB and they are building around him. They did their due diligence in looking at all options, and chose to stay the course. Some might want to change reality to fit their desires, but that's what happened. That being said, the future is up to Blake. If he wants to keep it, he'll have to earn that right. Those are just the facts, not anyone's (and certainly not Twitters, lol) opinion.

That's never not been the case. They've said all along he's got a lot of work to get a lot better. He was granted an option exercise of one year. He was NOT re-signed to a lengthy contract signaling his job is secure.

Got to be an encouraging sign for Blake.
Bottom line, Blake knows he has to be a better QB. What he does not need to do is totally carry the team on his back, like he has been asked to do the last two years. Fournette will help make this offense more balanced What I look forward to seeing is more play action with Fournette and with DeDe Westbrook in the slot taking the top off the defense. Should be plenty of open areas for Blake to move the Jags down the field. Let's hope the off-season work on fundamentals pays off for the Jags. I am sure Blake is tired of having the whole league blaming him for how badly the Jags performed the last two years. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Smart move, gives us the option to sill get a high draft pick in 2019 should we not land a QB in next years draft
Quote:Please explain to us, in detail, why a team with our cap situation, is worse off for picking up this option that is not guaranteed and still allows us to cut Blake if he sucks again. Quote:Still waiting for my question to be answered I know you were talking to Bklyn, but I've already answered your question earlier in the thread below. Quote:They would have done it by now if they were going to and it's not "much cheaper" than the franchise tag. If the $19 mil figure in the OP is accurate, it would be about $3 mil cheaper than the franchise tag which would be about $22 mil. By not exercising it and reserving the use of the franchise tag if need be instead, you can just treat the $3 mil difference as a premium for not having to worry about him getting injured and owing a QB you have no interest in $19 million the following year. And rest assured if Blake has a season ending injury this year, he's pretty much done here just the same as if he doesn't fix his decision making and clean up his release. That's $3 million well spent if they feel compelled to franchise him versus a potential waste of $19 mil with the option. It is guaranteed for injury and many on here are way too flippant about the possibility of significant injury happening. With the wait and franchise him if need be approach, you've taken that risk of losing $19 mil or whatever it is completely off the table. It would be so #BecauseJaguars for Blake to tear his ACL or suffer some other equally catastrophic injury in pre-season or early on in the season before we've had a real good look at him after this supposed great off season he's having. We're going to be in a very favorable cap situation next year as well, we should be very competitive in re-signing our guys that are hitting free agency if we still want to based on their respective performances this year. If we had to use the franchise on an 5th year option-less Blake, it's probably one of the better team financial situations to be in league wide as far as still being able to re-sign the guys we want to keep that are hitting free agency next year. That's assuming they don't just want out of Jacksonville. And if they do want out, do we really care if they leave in free agency when we're going to get a compensatory pick anyway? If you don't want to be here and you're in the middle of your contract, maybe we'll trade you, but tough [BLEEP] otherwise. If you don't want to be here and you're a free agent... Bye Felicia.
I can't see the issue with it. I'm not a Bortles believer but we didn't really have other options with this bad QB class.
If he shows he can finally improve then it's great and we can keep him. If he keeps struggling with decisions making, reading coverages and mechanics then we can cut him. No big deal. I guess the first half of the season will be crucial for him and the team. We have the bye week after the 8th game and if he struggles till then I can see him being replaced till the end of the season and being cut. If he'll play good and especially if he plays smart not putting us in bad situations then it's a win win for him, the team and us (the fans) of course. He is what he is.In 2015 he looked much different than last year...so I don't think that's the case. He was bad last year, no one is arguing that, but if this past draft class we didn't like any of the QB's (which most said this is one of the weaker QB classes in a long time), why would you take a guy. Only argument one could make about getting legit competition is bringing in Kaepernick (which I think we should do). Not a fan of picking up the option, but if he sucks throught first 5-6 games take him out so you don't risk injury and plug in Allen (who is probably just as solid of prospect as guys like Peterman and Kayya in all reality, at least for the short term which is what people want as none of these three are likely long term starters) and see what he can do before taking a guy next year. Bortles has never had a legit running game, he's always had to throw and throw and throw. Let's see how he does after an offseason of working on mechanics, something he last did prior to 2015 when he had a solid season.
Quote:Figured I'd start a discussion on this since we could hear something as early as tomorrow with the May 3rd deadline gadfly approaching. If picked up, we'd be guaranteeing against injury an amount of $19.053 Million. I won't be surprised if we pick it up. I think it may instill some confidence in Blake knowing that the organization believes he can bounce back. It already appears they believe this with every move this offseason. We shall see. Quote:Shocked nobody was brought in. I think no QB being brought in at in, draft nor free agency; or post draft free agency, would have Blake feeling fairly confident right now.
Now lemme think... :geek: What should my avatar....
Alfie is in full emo mode right now. Its pretty hilarious actually.
As far as picking up Blakes 5th year, that was coming. Jaguars are going all in on Blake, no pressure at all Blake.......... |
