Smoot

Quote:As ridiculous as me saying it's a good pick, not having seen a game. The more I look at this, however, the more it reminds me of Yannick. 3rd rd pass rusher with similar #'s, production and exposure.  I mean, more of us knew about Yannick and maybe expected that pick in the 3rd, whereas, this is different in those regards. I can see similar production on the NFL level, that they may equal eachother, almost to a Freeny/Mathis type comparison on the outsides.

I'm thinking more Reggie Hayward than Yannick.

Hayward prior to injury was really good.

I take that back because I'm finally watching some film on him. He's not Reggie Hayward... he's Paul Spicer.

I'm just realizing how big and athletic he truly is with one hell of a bull rush.

Where would this 3rd round OG play that everyone wanted so bad?

Cam Robinson will be at LG for the next couple seasons and AJ Cann is at RG.

Just assuming that a guy who every team in the NFL passed on at least two times is gonna come in and start over those two and be an improvement is very short sighted.

This was a very weak draft for OL.......so a guy who doesn't go in the first few rounds obviously isn't very highly regarded.

Just because as fans we think we have this huge need on the OL doesn't make it so and it certainly doesn't mean that a 3rd-4th round guy in a weak draft is automatically an upgrade.

So far we've changed 2 of 5 starters......that's a lot guys.

BTW,Smoot was considered a top 10 talent before this last season.

He then spent a season working on his hands with NFL coaches(Lovie Smith) and

he said himself he had his best season.

Sometimes improvement doesn't automatically lead to increased sacks.

He may have been double teamed all year also.

He may end up being a steal.

Anybody see the 2016 preseason college football player rankings?

This one is from PFF and Smoot is a No. 20 ahead of some big names.

Clearly coming into the 2016 season, Smoot was viewed as a late Rd 1 selection and certainly a value in Rd 2.

Oehser believes the club thinks he's a guy who could rush from either side.

Valuable asset if he can be a guy who can rotate in and cause problems to earn more playing time.

Meh... seems like posturing and inaccurate analysis by the amateur draftniks.  You don't drop from a supposed round 1-2 guy to rated as a round 3-4 guy the next year by simply having an "off" year in production.

That just means the projection shouldn't have been higher than round 3-4 to begin with.

He may be the next Reggie White

He may have just got bored with playing lesser talent

He may have broken up with his gf (like mantae tao)'

He may have had difficult classes last semester

I recall hearing something about Smoot playing 91% of the snaps as a senior, up from 80 something as a Junior.

Maybe, he was overused and thus was not a fresh as he might be as a rotation player.

To me, he reminds me of an Olivier Vernon type of player.

I think we will see him as a 5 to 7 sack per season guy who could once in his career garner double digit sacks.

What he seems to do best is get to the QB and cause disruption in the backfield.

Who cares about sacks, if he can cause the QB to throw the ball, a quarter second early and help our defense get off the field on 3rd down.

His teammate Carroll Phillips was an UDFA for the Jags and had more sacks playing the other DE for the Fighting Illini.

Smoot is the odds on favorite to rotate with Calias at the strongside DE spot, but he'll still have to fend off Malliciah Goodman, Jonathan Woodard and Hunter Dimick to secure the role. There's also Lerentee McCray to consider, but I think he's more in the mix for the backup SLB spot.

Watching one of the videos of the draft wrapup, they mentioned that Smoot was rated by PFF (or some other service) as the No. 1 Power DE, or Best Bull Rusher.

Hopefully this translates on the field.

He's likely going to rotate in at both RE and LE.

I remember hearing about this guy last off season as a possible first rounder but I've never seen any games he was in. Illinois was also 3-9 this season with a lot of those loses being decided pretty early judging from a quick glance at the box scores. Possible that after a pretty early lead most teams just tried to run the clock out, which gave Smoot less opportunities for stats. I particularly didn't care for this draft at all, only pick I liked was Cam Robinson in the second. The only solace I've found in this is that every draft I absolutely get hyped up about 5/7 picks and I'm usually wrong. Last year I was hyped about only Ramsey and didn't like the Yannick pick and Yannick looks pretty promising. I'm hoping this year since I'm down on our draft they will all surprise us.

This from Big Cat Country...

http://www.bigcatcountry.com/2017/4/29/1...-you-think

and specifically Mel Kiper has the Jags top three picks in the 2017 college draft as all projected RD 1 selections...

https://twitter.com/tealtalk/status/8581...96/photo/1

Of course, there is the ol saying... "what a difference a year makes."

Still maybe Mel was right and the Jags drafted three quality players with their top three players

I think the Smoot pick will be the most "important" of this draft class.

We pretty much know what we are getting with Fournette, same can be said about Robinson. Some of us didn't want a RB at 4, othrers had a preference for other Olinemen but we can all agree that they should both be 2 solid players and contributors for us.

The Smoot pick on the other hand is at a premium position and he's a player we didn't see coming. When he was picked pretty much everyone was thinking we were going with another player or in another direction.

If he shows he can contribute then we won't have to count solely on Fowler opposite of Yannick (something that worries me) and that our pass rush rotation has a great chance to improve and make that last step to be really good.

I don't know if it was mentioned on some press conference or not but it would be nice to know if Wash was as high on him as he was last year with Yannick. Wash working Ngakoue out last year was crucial in us drafting him. It would be awesome to hit on another 3rd round DE just like last year after 2 very solid picks in round 1 & 2 (last year was a once in a lifetime scenario with Ramsey and Jack at 1 and 2 probably).

Good post. Not to mention that the Jags are looking for run blocking maulers. If it wasnt there why waste the pick. See what you can land in UDFA and develop from there. As for Smoot, he's a bull of a player. His tape shows what a disruptive force he is with no real comparable talent around him. Imagine that motor and bully style pass rush in the Jags Dline rotation. He looks the part of Osi Umenyiora.
