He played a lot better the last two games under Marrone. That's encouraging. I still hold belief he would've added one more win, in the final game, but I feel we lost that one purposely to secure a better draft spot.

It is guaranteed for injury and many on here are way too flippant about the possibility of significant injury happening. With the wait and franchise him if need be approach, you've taken that risk of losing $19 mil or whatever it is completely off the table. It would be so #BecauseJaguars for Blake to tear his ACL or suffer some other equally catastrophic injury in pre-season or early on in the season before we've had a real good look at him after this supposed great off season he's having.


We're going to be in a very favorable cap situation next year as well, we should be very competitive in re-signing our guys that are hitting free agency if we still want to based on their respective performances this year. If we had to use the franchise on an 5th year option-less Blake, it's probably one of the better team financial situations to be in league wide as far as still being able to re-sign the guys we want to keep that are hitting free agency next year. That's assuming they don't just want out of Jacksonville. And if they do want out, do we really care if they leave in free agency when we're going to get a compensatory pick anyway? If you don't want to be here and you're in the middle of your contract, maybe we'll trade you, but tough [BAD WORD REMOVED] otherwise. If you don't want to be here and you're a free agent... You can't live scared like that. Who knows if an injury will occur. Let's say you decide to go the franchise tag route and then he blows up his knee the day after signing it. Now you're out an additional $3ish million for a scenario that's just as likely to happen as getting hurt under the option.


While I understand the thought process there, I personally don't see "risk of injury" as a good reason. If he doesn't get hurt and he plays well, we save $3mil. Can't live in fear of injury.

Let's all be real here, Blake's not a horrible QB. Did he play very badly last year, yes. But we all know that there was a multitude of things wrong with the offense last year (coaching staff, *cough* *cough*); not to mention Hurns and Robinson didn't really bring their A game. Add on the O-line struggles with the horrible running, nobody on offense really played that well (minus Lee for the most part). We have added a lot of the missing pieces on offense and have added better leadership and coaching personnel and I see a big change in offense this year. Let's hope that the defense doesn't slip (like every year we go through; offense plays well, defense sucks it up and reverse...).

Did Gabbert or Henne, heck even Garrard and Leftwich ever put up offensive numbers like Blake has? We just need to see from him better decision making and less turn overs, and he'll be good to go. I think our team is in very good shape now. Let's just hope they get it together on Sundays....

Possibly.  It also could have been the case if one of the 3 QBs taken in the first round would have lasted until the end of the 1st that they might have traded up at that point to get him.  I know very few here will buy this, but we don't know how much interest our front office might have had in Trubisky since he was gone before our 1st pick.  Heck, what if one of the teams the Bears were concerned about jumping them for Trubisky was us?

 

We'll never know though unless some photo of the draft board gets leaked like Dallas's did several years ago.

 

 

Actually we do sort of now because Coughlin spoke after the Fournette pick about the four players they coveted at the top of the draft. Those four players are Myles Garrett, Solomon Thomas, Leonard Fournette and Jamal Adams.

Him improving his throwing motion will get the ball out quicker, but I don't think he will ever not be a turnover machine. I worry that with less throws he will feel the pressure more and turn it over the same. But the option isn't official till 2018 so if he crashes and burns then we put someone else in and be done with Bortles and Caldwell at once.

One of the more sensible posts in this thread.

 

Sure he played bad at times this past season and so did a lot of the team (especially on offense and special teams).  However, he did also do some nice things too.

 

My hope is that with a better run game he won't have to throw as often and when he does he can benefit from the play-action roll-out kind of plays which he is actually pretty good at.

It's callous disregard for the owner's money.  You don't risk $19 mil when you can commit nothing and only have to pay roughly $3 mil more or approximately 15% more on his total salary in 2018 IF it becomes necessary to tag him and that's a big if.  He could play so poorly that the decision is easy to part ways.  He could also sign a long term contract if he plays well enough for one and the team feels ready to commit and give him a mulligan for 2016.  $3 mil over the course of a QB's entire contract is chump change and $3 mil for one season is worth the freedom from risk of injury especially given the financial situation of this team.  It's not living scared, it's mitigating risk.  They had a clear choice for limiting that risk and they went the opposite direction.  It wasn't the financially prudent thing to do.  If you want risk, go to a casino.  Everything else is about managing risk and getting the biggest bang for the buck.  I could make a case that picking up the option is living scared.

 

I'm beginning to not like the way the power structure of the front office is set up unless Khan is treating them all as tied to the hip.  Bortles could play lights out and render the point moot though.  Hopefully that's how it plays out, but even if he does, the smart decision given what we know right this moment before he plays in 2017 would have been to not pick it up.
