If the Jags regret signing a player other than Fournette in the first it will more likely be Adams or McCaffrey than one of the QBs IMO. I think Fournette will work out OK though.

agree, I think Fournette was the 4th best player in the draft behind Garrett, Adams, and McCaffrey

Jamal Adams got drafted 6th overall.  Ronnie Lott got drafted 8th.  Eric Berry was drafted 5th and Earl Thomas 14th the same year. That seems way too high to draft a safety unless you are sure he's going to be All Pro.  If you are taking a defensive back top five he better be Deion Sanders.

You are missing the point.   I'm keenly aware of the typical positional value for safeties.

 

The question posed was about regretting not drafting a player.  I think the Jags are more likely to regret passing on Adams (however early 4 may be for a safety) than they are to regret not taking one of the 1st round QBs.

There really wasn't a good player at a position of need for the Jags. Fournette was an exceptional player, admittedly at a position that has been downgraded in recent years. Ideally the Jags would have traded down, but that wasn't possible this year and Caldwell has never managed to trade down; it's his biggest weakness.


 

Maybe Watson or one of the other QBs turns out better than Bortles, but guessing which one is a fools errand.

I don't know, I don't really agree with this argument anymore. Before rookie salaries weren't slotted the way they are now so it never made sense to draft a position like DB that high. Now that it's slotted, I see no reason why not to pick a guy that high if he is high on your board.

Some of the funniest, moronic posts I read this offseason were complaints about what the salary would be for who we selected.

 

It doesn't matter... it's slotted and you can't do a thing about it.

 

Makes zero sense in looking at it in cash terms.  It's set.

 

Pick the player you value most, regardless.

 

Money doesn't factor any longer as it's mostly pre-set.  Only wrinkles or potential hangups are guarantees, options, and language.  Otherwise, you already know the ballpark of the overall package.
