Cleveland matches Jags offer for Mack

Quote:Bridgewater scares me.  He is built like a 12 year old boy.  I can just see a 300lb linemen put a major hurting on him.

Bridgewater is slender but he's not really small. I'm not really afraid of him not being able to take a hit. I'm more afraid of him not being able to adjust to the pro game.

THERE IS A SKELETON INSIDE OF YOU.

RIGHT NOW. THIS IS NOT A JOKE.

Teddy got right back up after this hit...

According to Ian Rappoport, the Browns have been negotiating with Mack and haven't been able to reach a deal yet.

I think this is important, because it would give the Jags an idea of what kind of contract Cleveland is refusing to agree to.   That would give us the parameters of a contract.

So Mack comes to us and says, "I asked for this, they offered that, will the Jags raise Cleveland's offer enough that they will refuse to match?"   We could offer him something Cleveland has already turned down.

I want Mack but I hope we don't overpay him.

Man, the highest C salary in the league this year is 7.38 mil. Do we really want to spend 40-50% more than the next highest C in the entire league, which is probably what it would take? Mack is good but he isn't a demigod. I think it's one that would be exciting short term, but probably even as early as next year we'd be wanting to not have that 10 mil cap hit for a good not great C. And no, just because "we have the cap room so why not" is not a good excuse to blow a positional value salary out of the stratosphere.

He is just guessing.

That is a lot of money, but they have room and it wouldn't hurt them especially since they will be starting a drafted QB soon with a rookie contract.  Overpaying for a couple guys is not what breaks teams with regards to the cap, but rather those huge QB contracts.  We won't need to worry about that until at least 5 years.

Kind of agree with KY. It may seem cool now to spend 10M a year on a center but maybe next uear that could have been spent on a good pass rusher and a decent LB.

i would understand if they value Mack that high though, many people have said Center is challenging LT for the most important position on the line, especially in a ZBS.

Yupp I see what you and ky are saying about the money but if we draft well the money won't be a issue if the contract is front loaded heavy

I don't understand why you would pay all that money for a center to put Chad Henne back there. If you're gonna pay that money then let a rookie get comfortable behind a solid line like that.

He would be the best veteran to let a rookie center learn from though.

Yea, I can see that.  I still think the Jags are going Khalil Mack or Clowney at 3 and a QB in the 2nd.  That QB would sit for part of the year and then ease into the role towards end of the season or next season.  I know a lot of people think we will go Q at 3 if we sign Mack, but I think that a solid O-line means you can get a QB later and have a little more flexibility.  Who knows though.  Stupid draft is still like 4 weeks away!

Does anyone know what the Browns offered Mack and what Mack is asking for?

If he takes too many of those, he won't be playing very long, or at the very least his effectiveness won't be top notch for very long. There's no way those type of hits over a longer period of time would make him start to get gunshy/ happy feet.

Bridgewater's size is a legit concern.....probably his only major concern.

They will have to overpay if they want him. The question is whats the point where they say thats too much? I'm sure they have an idea of that, but we aren't privy to it.

I agree somewhat. I'd love Mack here, but we can't get too crazy. If we want him, the recent Jason Kelce contract will probably be a template.

Because you don't put a rookie QB back there until he's ready. I was hoping we as a fan base might have learned this by now. Maybe Gabbert doesn't flame out so bad had we sat him for a year, ala Rodgers.....If we draft a QB, and we will, Henne will almost certainly initially be the starter and once the coaching staff feels the rookie is ready for the challenge, they'll insert him into the starting lineup.

My point is you don't know how much gas Mack has left in the tank. I understand not throwing a rookie into the fire but why pay that money to a center with Chad Henne at the helm? By the time you give the rookie the keys to the offense Mack could be playing like Mike Brewster.

Gas in the tank?...This is only going to be Mack's 2nd contract - he's not "old", hell he's barely into his prime.

He'll be 29 this year. He aint that young, bro.

He's a center... Unless it takes a rookie QB that we draft 6 or 7 years to be ready to start, I wouldn't be worried.

To sign him, they will have to over pay. So what? After last years tight budget spending, let's get some bodies that will move this team forward. Everyone knows how crucial an O Line is. Center being the nucleus .

Henne may not be " elite" but he had little chance last year. Give him time, get back Blackmon and watch improvement.

The team is making moves to compete this year. Bring it.
Blakes Life Matters

The team is still years to be competitive. The right way to go is to build through draft. Although Mack is not old by NFL standard, but he is not young for this team.
