Cleveland matches Jags offer for Mack

Quote:I just want to know why there is such a thing as the transition tag?

The whole point of ditching restricted free agents (for the most part) was to give the players freedom. Mack is practically being held hostage.

One can make a case that it's better to receive the Transition Tag than the Franchise Tag.  While the tender is higher with the Franchise Tag,  it's rare that a non-exclusive Franchise Tagged player gets an offer sheet.   If he signs the Franchise Tag,  while he's guaranteed the amount of the tender offer,  if the player suffers a major injury,  his future bargaining leverage could be severely impacted in an adverse manner.   A player who receives the Transition Tag has a noticeably greater chance to receive an offer sheet.   At least with an offer sheet,  he will get much more long term security,  even if he prefers the team he was with previously doesn't match the offer sheet.

Quote:Yeap no way we don't match it. Jags are actually saving us money lol. We were ready to pay him close to 11 and you guys signed him to a 2 year 18 million dollar contract.

Edit* Thats all if this is the true offer of course.

Exactly this. At a minimum the Browns keep their stalwart center for 2 more seasons. During that time Mack can guage whether or not things are on the upswing and restructure or opt out for free agency. Personally I can't Blame the guy for wanting to test the open water after 5 years, and I understand why The browns made the move they did by giving him the transition tag. At that point with the cap space Cleveland had, every team in the NFL knew they would have to pony up the big bucks just to have a shot. All the while Mack knew he was gonna get paid big time either way and that was all that mattered.

Also to the posters who think that if the Browns match, its gonna prevent them from re signing Hayden, Gordon etc... Runyon said it quite a few times, they will have plenty of space to do those deals. Farmer is no joke, he knows what he's doing.

I came to this site to see what the jags fans thought about the whole situation. I have read the last 20 or so pages in this thread and something really jumped out at me. When the first reports of a deal between Mack and the jags came out, THE MAD DOG made quite a few comments that were pretty much spot on. Granted, not every detail is out there yet, but the main issue THE MONEY is, and being reported by multiple sources on NFL.COM and just about every other sports site you can think of. The offer that the jags made just wasn't enough to get it done, and even if the Browns only have Mack for 2 more years, that offer saved them a few million. Then from that point quite a few of you went on to to just lambaste the dude for stating the obvious. Reading all this, I felt like I was watching a pack of middle school bullies beating on some kid. If I was a Jacksonville jaguars fan reading that, dude id be embarrassed. I know on the Browns board we might cuss like sailors and make a few momma or [BLEEP] jokes, but we respect our fellow Browns fans. THE MAD DOG, if you ever want to talk football with some real fans, drop on by. You even have a name that will fit in......

I'm a Jags fan 100%. However, I usually post objectively regarding team matters. I have had stances in the past that criticize the team sometimes (usually where warranted) and this makes me a target around here. It is what it is. I'll never be a "company line" sort of poster.

Thats not true, either. I have lots of fans/ friends on here.

It's interesting that people think using the tags is "holding a player hostage" when other teams do it. Did you voice the same concerns when the Jags used the Franchise Tag (a much more limiting tag) on Josh Scobee and Marcedes Lewis?

The purpose of the tags is to protect small-market teams - of which Jacksonville is one of the smallest - from having all their best players bolt for the big city, hindering their opportunity to have any sustained success.

If you want Marcedes Lewis, you can have him.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

I have people PM me all the time talking about how they enjoy my posting. These aren't people I regularly converse with, so "fans" is probably accurate usage.

No doubt at the end of the day you are a Jags fan and there is no real set rules and boundaries you have to stay in as a poster. What irks everyone is..............

YOU ARE NEGATIVE LITERALLY ALL THE TIME. YOU GO AGAINST AND PLAY DEVIL'S ADVOCATE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL THE TIME.

"GUS BRADLEY SIGNED A 300LB  RB THAT CAN THROW 90 YARDS AND RUN A 3.1 40" TMD SAYS"WELL HIS FOOTWORK SEEMS A LITTLE SHADY AND HE DROPPED 1 PASS THAT ONE YEAR, I THINK THIS IS A TURRIBLE SIGNING!"

You get the point? It's ok if you are going to be objective and it MAKES SENSE.

Jacksonville is the tenth biggest market.....

Small market team, if you didnt watch football would you ever think of Greenbay Wisconsin?

Jax is the 10th biggest market small market team......is that what you just said?.....

That attempt at a crafty comment still probably puts the Jags in the 29th or 30th market in the NFL, I'm guessing.

TMD is the biggest troll on these boards. It has been proven over and over again.

Yet when he's banned everyone waxes poetic about how much he added.

I'm glad these boards are here, I need a laugh.

Browns fans talking smack about anything LOLOL There's a reason a bodily function is referred to as "Taking the Browns to the SuperBowl". In fact, it's far closer than they will ever be. What a joke of a franchise.

On another note, The Flying-J just south of St Augustine, has some great grub, and lot lizards.

I don't think TMD is a troll, just misinformed/always thinks he's right no matter what.

I'm not sure where you're getting that number - the city's population? - but that's not how market size is determined. Teams are classified as "small-market" or "large-market" based on their Designated Market Area - their TV market. Jacksonville was the 4th smallest in the NFL in 2013.

Seriously, that is the funniest [BLEEP] ever.

Rapoport reported late Thursday that the Browns have not made a decision on whether they'll match the Jaguars' offer. Sources in Cleveland indicate the team is "really mulling it over" and that the specifics of the offer has made the decision tougher than originally imagined.

NFL Media's Albert Breer earlier reported that Cleveland planned to match any deal for Mack, a notion supported by Browns owner Jimmy Haslam's public statements.
