I'm not sure where you got that in my comment. Of course they wanted to work out a long-term contract. I'm saying that if the only alternatives were letting him walk now, tagging him for a year, or tagging him for two years, this contract is better than all of those even if he opts out after year 2.

Get other teams involved and drive up the garanteed money? While the year-by-year numbers might have been the same, the guaranteed money almost certainly would have been a lot lower.

Yes, there was an alternative they could have presented (the current one that's in their lap to "immediately" decide on) that would have been a "done deal" before it ever got to this point.

Not quite. The Tag would have only guaranteed him the $10mil for this season. What if he got hurt?

More importantly, ALL of the guaranteed money in a contract is paid upfront, even though it's cap hit is spread out over the life of the contract.

In the next couple weeks Alex Mack is going to be receiving a check for $18 million dollars from one team or the other.

No, he hasn't. At any time. This is completely a creation of the internet. Mack has said that he likes Cleveland and is open to staying there. If he was desperate to leave Cleveland he would have signed the tender and left next year when they were less likely to tag him again rather than giving them the opportunity to lock him up for at least 2 years.

 

Below is what he said.  It's not a ringing endorsement.  I think he would prefer to go somewhere else.

Does Mack's agent send Caldwell a fruit basket? Cleveland still looks moronic. They couldn't reach a deal so we helped them drive the price to a record number for a Center which will hamstring them when they need to redo deals for other guys on their roster. They would've looked foolish regardless. But that's hardly new for them.
