While Jaguars fans talked about Blake Bortles getting a fifth season in Jacksonville, the Raiders and Derek Carr's agent were not talking at all. In fact Carr was frustrated there wasn't any communication going on because he does not want contract talks to be a distraction. Most likely some of the people who opposed paying Bortles $18 million for one season don't know it is only guaranteed for injuries. Carr OTOH will receive a signing bonus and other guarantees that have nothing to do with his health, payable over multiple seasons, whenever he signs his second contract.

One of the more interesting factors in Carr's contract negotiations is because Nevada has no state income tax he wants it to be backloaded. He might be paid $25 million on average. I doubt Carr will get paid that much in 2018, when Bortles plays under the fifth year option for $18 million, unless part of it is bonuses.
