Completely agree. 18 mil is Mike Glennon money. We all know that if Blake shows out, 18 million will be a bargain.

While Jaguars fans talked about Blake Bortles getting a fifth season in Jacksonville, the Raiders and Derek Carr's agent were not talking at all. In fact Carr was frustrated there wasn't any communication going on because he does not want contract talks to be a distraction. Most likely some of the people who opposed paying Bortles $18 million for one season don't know it is only guaranteed for injuries. Carr OTOH will receive a signing bonus and other guarantees that have nothing to do with his health, payable over multiple seasons, whenever he signs his second contract.

One of the more interesting factors in Carr's contract negotiations is because Nevada has no state income tax he wants it to be backloaded. He might be paid $25 million on average. I doubt Carr will get paid that much in 2018, when Bortles plays under the fifth year option for $18 million, unless part of it is bonuses.

He wants the contract backloaded? I am not sure that is a good move. Yeah I see the tax benefits, but it makes the team more likely to cut him if he has an unexpected drop off and a huge cap number. A bit risky. But when your talking an extra 9.5% of taxes in California for that top level (I believe that's it currently), I can see why he would do it. He just has to make sure that his money is gaurenteed in those last couple seasons so he disincentivizes the Raiders to cut him.

Now I see what the holdup is on the contract, the Raiders don't want to backload a deal cause that would give him leverage for the next deal also if he performs at the same, or higher level, and penalize their cap later. Thats a real pickle. He might end up with the franchise tag over this for a couple years if hes really wants to wait for Nevada.

Yes, it's improvement, but it's Blaine Gabbert 2012 level improvement. - Pirkster
