I think a lot of Bortles struggles last year stem from a combination of factors.

First, he was coming off a solid 2nd year, and they thought his mechanics were going to be fine. He didn't think he would need to go back to California to continue refining his mechanics. That was a mistake.

Second, as the season progressed, it became clear that he was being asked to do a lot more than he should have been, and as a result, things got sloppy.

I think that what we are hearing from him now shows that he's got his head in the right place, and from all indications, that's showing on the field. The fact that he has decided to go back to California to continue working on even more specific areas where he feels he still needs to focus shows he's maturing as a player, and understands that he will need to keep working on things in order to assure he has a successful career. I see that as a good thing, and I'm hoping that it translates into a more productive, successful future for Bortles. The team is certainly gambling on that, and they have done everything possible to build the roster around him to help him reach his potential.

I think we're going to see a much improved Bortles both mentally and physically when the games matter.
