Next year, the Jags should draft two quarterbacks.

If we're going to be looking at signing a free agent QB as a placeholder next season, we have to keep in mind that we are projected to be only $8 million under the 2018 salary cap. That all but eliminates us from signing Jimmy G, Drew Brees or Kirk Cousins. I also expect Jay Cutler and Josh McCown to go back into retirement after the season. Alex Smith might get cut after this season, but he's gonna want more than we could pay. That leaves this list of free agent QB's.....
Tyler Bray Luke McCown Dan Orlovsky Geno Smith Sam Bradford Drew Stanton Ryan Fitzpatrick Derek Anderson Mark Sanchez Case Keenum Brandon Weeden Ryan Griffin Matt Moore Teddy Bridgewater Kellen Clemons Joe Webb Chase Daniel Austin Davis T.J. Yates Matt McGloin E.J. Manuel Thaddeus Lewis Ryan Nassib Kellen Moore David Fales Tom Savage Scott Tolzien Of that list, I would consider Tom Savage, Chase Daniel, Austin Davis, Drew Stanton and the loser of the Sam Bradford/Teddy Bridgewater battle in Minnesota (assuming Bridgewater can still play and we can afford either him or Bradford.) I'm not a big believer in stashing QB's on the PS. That means they either aren't good enough to stick with a team or they are good enough for another team to snag them. PS QB's are just there to run the drills. I'd rather keep 3 good QB's on the active roster when that is a real position of need, over any other position. If we take a QB early in the draft and another one in the late rounds, we still have plenty of picks to address the O-Line. All of our needs are not gonna get addressed in one draft anyway. We need to prioritize. |
