He is also just 6'0," but has everything else going for him. He also throws a great deep ball and has always been a winner. Depending on where he is ranked at the end of this season, he may also declare for the draft. As a Penn State fan, I hope he returns to State College next season, but the Jaguars could do much worse than him.
For me, it's all about accuracy. Mayfield has been pinpoint accurate for most of his career and last season he completed around 70% of his passes. McSorley on the other hand, is pretty streaky. Last year he couldn't even hit my minimum of 60% pass completions. Combine that with his reported 6' height and I just don't see an NFL QB. For smaller QB's, they need to be accurate and at 6'1" Mayfield shows me what I wanna see.
I agree about the need for pinpoint accuracy when considering undersized quarterbacks. It seems like McSorley has gotten better in this category. He was 18/25 but had at least 3 drops by his receivers (wet conditions). Of course, Akron is not the best opponent so we'll see what he does against teams like Michigan, Ohio State and Iowa.
The thing I like about both he and Mayfield is their leadership and decision-making. It would be nice if they were 6'3" or taller, but guys like Drew Brees and Russell Wilson have been able to overcome their lack of size due to excelling in other areas. The Jaguars' only successful quarterback, Mark Brunell, was also somewhat undersized yet took the team to 2 AFC championship games.
It is unfortunate that, as Jaguars' fans, we're still desperate to find a solid franchise quarterback after having drafted 3 guys very high in the 1st round only to fail for 1 reason or another. Whether it be Caldwell (doubtful), Coughlin or someone else calling the shots in the next draft, it appears they will have several good candidates to chose from. Lets hope they finally get it right.
By the way, your user name "TheO-LineMatters" is great. If Caldwell had this philosophy in the last draft the Jaguars would currently be in much better shape going into this season. Would we have been better off with Dan Feeney at one guard spot or Elflein at center with Linder moving back to guard? I believe the answer is obvious. It appears they still feel good about the interior of the line since they have so far passed on Boone, Zuttah, Greco and Dorian Johnson. I don't claim to be an expert on any of these 4 guys, but it would seem Caldwell would have pulled the trigger on at least one of them considering what he currently has on his roster.
