Box office is low because TV is so good. The home experience is so much better than it used to be. People can basically watch new movies that come out in theaters from their living room. It's just like going to football games. The home experience is better now with Redzone and Sunday ticket. You don't need to go to games anymore.

It has nothing to do with celebrities and their political viewpoints.

This and the trend of infantilism in movie subjects. Comic book movies were entertaining at first. Now they're just full-on stupid along with every other movie vomited out of the studios, which are mostly vacuous features of CGI explosions and fight scenes supported by a framework of insipid dialogue. Apparently the studios now almost exclusively cater to the mentality and intellectual capacity of pubescent boys. Movies are failing because they produce cheap dreck.
