What if your boss is just waving at you, and you mistake him waving with giving you the finger, so you shoot him the bird and tell all your friends that he did it first? Seems a lot more like what is happening here.

I can't disagree with that assessment, though I think a wave is too friendly. But no, I don't think McNair meant it the way it came across at all, and I don't think any explanation short of, "Hey guys, I'm actually a huge closet racist, and I am so sorry about that. I'm headed to counseling in the morning," would have appeased the players.
