The Future Quarterback - I think it's Bortles

All of this future quarterback is fun and will probably continue until April 26 or 27 when we select a q.b. in the draft. I would be surprised if the Jaguars pay top dollar for any of the free agents who will be available, however other teams will which should enable the Jags to draft someone who will eventually become the team's 1st true legitimate franchise quarterback since Brunell. We have to assume that Cousins, Tyrod Taylor, Bradford/Bridgewater and possibly Alex Smith will be starting elsewhere next season. Since the Jags will be picking very late in the 1st round, we can rule out Darnold (may not even declare), Rosen and Lamar Jackson. It would simply cost way too much to trade up for any of those guys. That leaves us with the following possibilities:

Mason Rudolph
Baker Mayfield
Ryan Finley
Darkhorse candidates: Ferguson, Thorsen, Falk, Stidham

My guess is that even Caldwell and Coughlin will have no idea who will end up being their pick until they see what the teams in front of them do. For the past several drafts, they've only needed a Plan A and Plan B since they picked so early. Thankfully, this will not be the case for 2018. I tend to agree with those who believe the Jaguars will trade up if "their guy" is still on the board somewhere around pick 20. I believe that at least 2 of the top 3 listed above WILL be available at that point. Although the Jags will need to likely give up both their 2108 and 2019 1st round picks, this deal would be a "no-brainer" considering how strong their team is in addition to being relatively young at most key positions. I have NO IDEA which of the potentially available q.b.'s will end up being the most successful in the NFL. They all have weaknesses, but so do Darnold, Rosen and Jackson. The fortunate thing is the Jags don't need to draft the next Elway or Marino to take them over the top. They just need someone who has a "good enough" arm combined with the intangibles which our past several quarterbacks have failed to possess: leadership, good decision-making, takes care of the ball, toughness (Blake does possess this trait) and ability to see the entire field. The Coughlin/Caldwell team so far get an A+ for the players they have acquired. Although q.b.'s are very hard to evaluate, I trust they will keep up the hot streak and find a way to finally bring a winning quarterback to Jacksonville.
