I'm pretty sure if the skins used the franchise tag on cousins again, he would be making something around 35 million for next season and that's insane money. He would be the highest paid QB in the NFL, and it would be by close to 8 million dollars. I don't think they will want to dish that out.

I agree that the Redskins don't want to Franchise Kirk Cousins for the reason you mentioned. Yet, if they don't agree to a multi-year contract, I think they will Franchise him if that means it's the only way to secure his rights. I'm not sold on Cousins as a Franchise QB. But from the Redskins perspective, they would be in a horrible situation if Cousins leaves as an UFA.

If the Skins franchise tag him in 2018, it will cost them $34 million.

It will severely hurt the Redskins from a Salary Cap standpoint. But not getting anything for Cousins other than a 2019 3rd Round Compensatory pick is something I don't think they will be willing to do if the remainder of this season for Cousins is along the lines of how the first 11 games went.
