I agree with giving him credit early on for helping to turn that organization around (they really were ABYSMAL before he got there; worse than the Jags were the past decade IMO).

But, his teams were always undisciplined, and he has made a ton of questionable coaching decisions in his tenure. There's a reason that he went 0-7 in the playoffs with CINCY. I mean, that is just incredible. They won their division 4 of those times,, and lost every single home playoff game.

A few of those Cincy playoff teams had a superb defense (one of the best in the league), a superb O-line (one of the best in the league), good running game, and terrific WRs  (Chad Johnson/Houshmandzadeh;  Green/Jones/Sanu). 

Lack of discipline and terrible coaching really cost them in most of those games. 

Cincy let Mike Zimmer, Jay Gruden, and even Hue Jackson walk to other coaching positions while keeping Lewis. MISTAKE.

As a kid that grew up wacthing/attending/loving the Bengals for decades (I was around much earlier before the Jags came into existence , Lol); And as a "quasi-Cincy fan" still (I still leave near, and am surrounded by Cincy fans and game viewing each week),, I say regarding Marvin Lewis leaving:
