I dont know about mailing in the season... but I was saying from the beginning it was in Caldwell's best interest to go with Gabbert(which I guess you could argue is mailing in the season). GM's are tied to the QB they bring in. Doing so last offseason would only accelerate Caldwell's timeline. This year he was playing with house money and can blame Gene Smith. Im sure they thought to bring in some young players and get them experience... and if the team won a few games even better.
