That's my theory on aliens more so than them being life forms like our own.

Inter-dimensional beings match that description. And if we've had contact on Earth, that's a more likely scenario. Another dimension occupying the same physical space we are. 

There's a theory that ghosts are actually extradimensional beings, which is why they're so hard to see/contact. Essentially they could be completely different beings, or there's the possibility your "soul" or "life force" or whatever you want to believe is moved into that dimensional space when not supported by your body.
