Total QBR this season. Bortles 55.2 (12th). Kirk Cousins 52.0 (17th). Jared Goff 52.0 (16th). One QB excelled in the AFC Divisional game (highest Total QBR for a game of any QB in the playoffs) and the other 2 will be watching this weekend from their couches.

His career trajectory has gone from poor to mediocre which is consistent with most young QBs in the NFL. It stands to reason he could improve with a second year under a good coach. The phenom 22 year old quarterback lighting up the league is the exception and not the rule. People on this board are foaming at the mouth over Alex Smith who when comparing their first 4 years in the league he makes Bortles look like an all pro.

Look how long it took Smith to get to this point. He's in his mid 30's and this coming season, he will be on his 3rd team, yet he appears to be peaking. We can't afford to wait that long on Bortles and neither did Smith's former team. Some QB's develop slow. Maybe Bortles will develop into a star QB someday, but it'll likely be at a snail's pace judging by what we've seen. This team is built to win now, so in the meantime while we're waiting, why not spend a high pick on a QB who may develop quicker and allow us to get where we wanna be at a faster pace? What is the drawback? We could easily still get a stud TE in round 2 and a major upgrade at OG in round 3.
