If Bortles is released and McCarron is signed (assuming he becomes a free agent; I'm also assuming he wouldn't be signed to be Bortles' backup. I sure don't think Caldwell would give up a second rounder for a backup) why would McCarron accept a "modest three year deal" - especially if he's going to be the franchise QB for the next ten years.

If Bortles is retained I think Coughlin/Caldwell bet on Bortles' durability and select a QB in the third round or so.

A 'modest' deal accepted by McCarron means he is willing to accept the challenge of proving his worth. Just make the contract  say something like league-average for starters and make it conditional that if he EARNS the starting quarterback job, the team and his agent will begin to iron out terms that will elevate McCarron to where he needs to be salary-wise for many years to come.

Otherwise, it's likely McCarron will go straight to the Patriots where Tom Brady will personally detail him on the art of elite quarterback play. As Tom's role decreases McCarron's role increases. If all works out according to plan, Belichick and Brady pass the torch in a couple of years and the New England Patriots continue years and years of unparalleled elite franchise dynasty status.

You worry too much. Just get McCarron in. He's a two time NCAA Championship quarterback. A couple of practices and he'll figure it out.
