The point was that Oehser and Sexton both wrote as if Smoot was a great player. He hasn't shown much in the way of a pass rush, which is what you want from the DE position, and he's not the size of a run stuffing "big end." He will probably get better, most DEs do, but he's far below the level of the Jags other three DEs and would need to take a big leap in production to get close to that level.

At no point do they say he is a great player.[/font]

[font=Montserrat-Light]Smoot is obviously below the level of our other DEs because, frankly, Campbell and Ngakoue are two of the best DEs in the league and Fowler was the 3rd pick in the draft with enormous pedigree and talent. You clearly just read what you want to read.[/font]

OK, so "great" was a bit of hyperbole.

Still, "16 solid games" and "quality depth" is a bit over the top for a DE with ZERO POINT ZERO sacks. He's right up there with Vernon Gholston. I remember Derrick Harvey being solid against the run too.
