Still scoffing! Laugh all you want. New England has had this in the works for some time. The Jaguars can still make a play, but if you were A. J. McCarron would you accept the challenge of beating out Bortles or accept the role of heir-apparent from a franchise that has DOMINATED the NFL for close to 16 years?

How could you NOT see this coming? I really hope Tom Coughlin will step in and try to convince McCarron to come into Jacksonville and challenge Bortles for the starting QB job.

Tom Brady's successor may not be in the 2018 NFL Draft class. Instead, New England looks like they're dipping their toe into the free agent waters.

According to WEEI's Kirk Minihane, the Patriots have made a contract offer to free agent quarterback AJ McCarron. The specifics on what kind of deal the Patriots have put on the table for McCarron were not reported, but this is overall a surprising turn of events for New England.

Following the trades of Jimmy Garoppolo along with Jacoby Brissett, many pointed to the Pats trying their hand at finding another quarterback through the draft. While that's still entirely possible, their pursuit of McCarron is intriguing to say the least.

The 27-year-old has spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Bengals after they drafted him in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Alabama. In his very limited playing time, McCarron has totaled 920 yards passing on a 64.7 completion percentage to go along with six touchdowns and two interceptions.

McCarron is also a product of Bill Belichick's close friend Nick Saban at Alabama where he was under center for three National Championship teams.
