Why else spend all that money when they will soon have to pay megabucks for guys like Ramsay, Jack and Yannick? That being said, the 1st 2 draft picks are likely to be either guys who would upgrade a starting position immediately or be a backup at a position in which they need more quality depth in case the starter gets hurt. Currently, the positions which fit this description would likely be:

1. Guard- Cann can easily be upgraded.
2. Q.B.- Need solid backup in case Blake misses games. Last year proved a solid back-up could win if surrounded by excellence at most other positions.
3. Offensive tackle- Who will take over if Cam or Parnell go down. Wells is not the answer.
4. Linebacker- Is Blair Brown ready?
5. Nickel/Backup corner- Do they know something about Hayden that nobody else does?
6. Tight end- Still don't have the dangerous receiver, although ASJ may be that guy.

If they went for immediate starters, the choice would likely be guard (Hernandez) or linebacker (Vander Esch). I don't think they'll do that in round 1 simply because they already got Norwell and guards can be found later than the first round. As far as linebacker, that's a possibility, but would they take a guy that high who would come off the field a lot on passing downs as Poz did?

Quarterback seems to make the most sense. Although the guy they'd take would not start, the odds say Blake won't maintain his streak of not missing any games and a quality backup is especially critical for a team capable of going deep into the playoffs. Rudolph/Jackson would be the likely candidates and both seem capable of being franchise quarterbacks down the road. I prefer Rudolph due to fear of injuries to Jackson, but regardless of which guy they like more this position should be taken in round 1.

On several occassions I've heard Caldwell say that he looks for immediate starters in the first three rounds.

Yea, I believe that's true. He'll have to love Rudolph to take him in the first knowing that he'll likely be sitting for at least 1 year.
