Because idiots feed the narrative and give them free marketing. Amazing how the general public doesn’t realize how minuscule the NRA is in politics in general. Why don’t we see the harassing of the American Medical Association or U.S. Department of Health & Human Services everytime someone dies from pills? I mean, 46 people a day die from legal drugs.

The root cause is that people like money. Being in high-level politics is a great way to get lots of it in many forms, most of which are virtually untraceable. That money comes from lobbyists, who get it from the industries they represent. They get large sums of it, in fact, and they're instructed to pass it on down the line in some way or another to those who are loyal or important to their cause.

The solution? Campaign finance reform. If you put BP on the same playing field as the 5,000 commercial fishermen who live in that district and would have their livelihoods destroyed by that drilling platform going in, suddenly those 5,000 voices become more important than BP's $10k.
