Legally they are very different

Correct indeed. Morals are single person events not necessarily supported by all, nor enforceable by law. The actions related may be. Ethics may be adopted by a group, but still not supported by all. Law is based on a normative system of objective content for the masses. The rule of law must be intersubjectivelly intelligible, meaning the rule must be substantially understood by all. This guy broke no law or enforceable, intelligible norm. Now, New York does have a pretty broad human rights statute that he could be in violation of. But it's a stretch. The irony here is that the schmuck is the one suffering damages of harassment, discrimination, and a bevy of others.
