Cool article on WR metrics of top WR in draft

Just look at Sammy Watkins' monster Orange Bowl game. 16 catches 227 yards and 2 touchdowns. But guess what? He ran only 1 (ONE) route that wasn't a 0, 9, or swing pass. ONCE the ENTIRE game. It was a 5 yard out, and it wasn't even a good route. This is why I am very skeptical of Watkins as a prospect. His monster games are a result of scheme and athleticism. He very rarely is asked to line up and beat a cornerback with his route running.
How some people think that a receiver who has only run 2 routes his entire career and put up half the stats of Blackmon, who was a complete receiver in college, is a better prospect, I will never know. |
