My thoughts on the game

Nice comments on the first pre-season game.

1. I want to see TE Scott Orndoff work with the first team next week. It's uncanny. In him, I think we have a long-term player solution, who has a REAL chance to become a well-respected pro. I mean even a household name, if you know what I mean.

I have been examining his Combine/draft numbers. He was electronically timed 4.79 in his 40-yard dash.

He is swift-footed. Runs balanced. Tracks the football extremely above average. Has the best pair of hands on a tight end I have seen since Pete Mitchell.

From NFL Draft Scout:

2016
Enjoyed one of the most productive seasons ever by a Pitt tight end, compiling 35 catches for 579 yards (16.5 avg.) and five touchdowns...finished second on the team in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns (tied)...was highly instrumental in the Panthers' 43-42 upset at eventual national champion Clemson with nine catches for 128 yards (14.2 avg.) and two TDs—all career highs...helped Pitt rally past Georgia Tech with a 74-yard scoring reception that tied the game, 34-34, with 3:50 left...Orndoff's TD set the stage for the Panthers' game-winning field goal as time expired...selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game...named to the All-ACC Academic Football Team for the third time.

2. Kessler did a better job of performing than Bortles did. Blake makes throws that twist his receivers in the opposite direction of where they should be heading. Can he throw a well-timed flats pass...ever? The ball is late and the receiver has already taken up the gap between himself and the defender. How many times do we see Blake throw a flats pass that the route-runner has to stall, spin all the way around in order to make the catch? A lot. Low and outside pitches. This NOT a problem beyond remedy. It needs fixing now. Otherwise, Bortles defied throwing easy interceptions....twice. He was NOT making a quality effort at following typical pass play progressions like Kessler was. The long-standing knock on Blake is he excels in circumstances where he knows his primary target. Beyond that nothing. That's a single-option quarterback who lacks a complete grasp on how to command the field of play. At this stage for Bortles, it's likely a lack of peripheral vision rather than slow information processing. It's a wonder why Blake hasn't memorized the play book well enough to know he doesn't have to lock on to the primary receiver. On any given pass play there is a route capable of long gain and/or scoring. Always. It just so happens that it isn't always the first priority receiver's route. At any rate, it is WAY too early in the new year for Bortles to be acting so greedy.

3. Tanner Lee is a awful front office mistake. Dump him immediately and pick up former Memphis QB Riley Ferguson, who happens to be available. You don't really believe Anthony Miller single-handedly was responsible for his own success, do you?

4. Josh Allen? Dang it. Pay attention to the last throw.
