Doug Pederson rips Jaguars for coaching scared against the Patriots (merged)
|
I actually didn't have much of a problem with the kneel before the end of first half. Woud have I tried to run something and see what happens? Yeah, of course.
But I get why they did that, we were supposed to be up by a much wider margin and the refs just handed them 7 points with almost 60 yards of penalties. We [BLEEP] up anything at the end of that first half and it would get ugly real quick. Instead we knew we were going to have the ball back at the start of first half and nothing was gained, but not even compromised. Thing is that with all of the possibly predictable playcalling, mistakes etc, we were up 10 points in the 4th quarter and with the absurd Myles Jack whistle we would have been up 17 points in the fourth possibly discussing a coaching masterpiece. Like others pointed out I also wanted to see them at least trying those 2RBs formations and all that like in the first half but maybe they saw something different. I don't know. That's as much on them for not trying those formation again as much as it's a credit to them because prior to the Patriots game we never saw those Grant/Fournette formation and they played it brililantly to surprise the Patriots. Also in the 4th quarter field position was quite horrible and as much as Blake played well in the game we know how ugly it can get fast with a bad decision/throw. If they came out passing on a first down and he got INT in our own territory people would have ripped them for that. And as much as the playcalling was preditctable unfortuantely the execution wasn't good enough. Oline started being suspect (remember for exemple when they attempted the flea flicker on 1st down to go with a deep shot? Omameh was beaten badly right at the line of scrimmage and Bortles had to scramble and settle for a short pass to Hurns, the Oline wasn't holding up that good anymore towards the last part of the game), Bortles got away in a couple of situations with risky throws, Marcedes was mugged on 2 crucial third downs and the refs just didn't throw a damn flag, Bortles didn't see/preferred not to throw to a open Hurns (or was it Westbrook) for a good gain on one of those 3rd downs. It was a combination of things. While the offense got predictable but I can understand some of the reasons for that, I have a bigger regret over the defense: they were fresh, the offense kept Brady on the bench for so long but we started playing more soft zone, refused to blitz or attack Brady with some creative packages and players didn't execute properly. What Tashaun Gipson (who played badly injured) said at the start of training camp about that 3rd&18 was quite telling: he said he got a bit relaxed cause he thought that with 3rd &18 Brady would never get the ball out in time with our Dline and was surprised when he managed to avoid pressure and reacted late to the throw to Amendola which they completed right on his face. A lot of things went wrong on that 3&18 from the way we chose to defend, the rushing package we sent to Brady, the refs not calling any holding and so on. But you can't have a player relaxing even for a second in a situation like that. And let's not forget that while we managed to escape injuries on the entire season on the defense we suddenly were with Campbell, Ngakoue banged up, Jack out of the game, Dareus out of the game, Gipson banged up. It was the worst timing. That 4th quarter comeback was a perfect storm: predictable playcalling, horrible officiating, poor execution, elite QB as your opponent. Only needed a couple more first downs and the clock keeps running, we can punt the ball deep in their territory instead of doing it from almost our endzone with Nortman shanking it and the game goes probably another way. Actually, more than the offense, we just needed that best pass defense in the league to defend a damn 3&18 and this game is probably over. Personally my main regret is not using Blake legs more (first game I think where he didn't have a single run), the predictable playcalling in the series right after the Myles Jack fumble recovery and defense going soft. This last one especially as it happened other times, when we have a bigger lead we tend to give a lot of cushion. You can do that with average QB's, can't do that against elite QB's. Hopefully the coaching staff learned from this, hopefully players will play better to close the game and hopefully we won't have to overcome that bad of an officiating as well. |
