As many times as coaches are second guessed for various decisions, it's interesting that it's automatically assumed Chip Kelly made the right decision naming Gabbert the starter over Kaepernick.

First off, Kelly (TMD's darling) has absolutely crashed and burned since his one year winning in Philly.  He ran that team into the ground, they fired him and then they won the Super Bowl.  He went to San Francisco and finished 2-14.  Now, he has run UCLA into the ground.  His acumen as a coach-especially at the professional level-is NOT beyond reproach.

Yes, he named Gabbert the opening day starter.  Starting the first five games, Gabbert had a TD-INT ratio of 5-6.  Eventually he was replaced by Kaepernick, who started the remainder of the year, and had a TD-INT ratio of 16-4.  Kaepernick also had a higher Y/A average, completion percentage, and a TWENTY TWO (22) point higher QB rating than Gabbert.

Yes, the team won only one game under each QB, which means the team had a lower winning percentage that year under Kaepernick.  However, the 49ers had the lowest rated defense in scoring and yards.

Also keep in mind, Kaepernick has an overall TD-INT ratio of (72-30), which is infinitely better than Gabbert (45-44) and, for that matter Bortles (99-72).  More food for thought:  taking the figures at profootball reference at face value, as of this posting, Kaepernick and Bortles played in exactly the same number of games while having ten (10) fewer starts.  Kaepernick's overall record is 28-30.  Now that isn't Brady-esque by any stretch of the imagination, but it's better than Bortles' 24-44 record overall.  So same number of games, ten fewer starts, four more wins, 14 fewer losses, and less than half the INTs as Bortles.  Oh yeah...Kaepernick did actually take a team to the Super Bowl before Kelly got there.  Kelly never coached a team to the Super Bowl.

There are reasons why Kaepernick would not be a good fit here.  The two years away from football alone would indicate a level of rust that would be hard to overcome. 

But let's not pretend Kaepernick remains unsigned because he was some horrible QB.

Let’s compare W-L between Bortles and Kaepernick and forget the dumpster fire that surrounded Bortles for the first 4 years.

Cause, you know... all 44 of those loses were strictly because of Bortles and not the HISTORICALLY bad head coach right?

I’m not saying Bortles is the future here, but he will have a future in the NFL as a backup somewhere if we do indeed move on from him. Can’t say that about Kaepernick regardless of the “stats”.
