Grade the Draft !

Round 1 pick : EDGE Josh Allen, Kentucky (A)
He's an A+ when it comes to value. Most considered him one of the three best players in the draft and we got him at #7. I was tempted to give him an A+, but it wasn't our biggest need. However, he's still a very strong A. Definitely a home run. Round 2 pick : OT Jawaan Taylor, Florida (A) Need met value here. Jawaan Taylor was the most popular pick for us in mock drafts at #7 overall and he's available to us in the second round? Absolutely amazing. BTW, it was smart to trade up. The team one spot ahead of us took an offensive tackle. Taylor would likely have been gone if the Jags didn't have the foresight to trade up. It was great to start off the draft with back to back home runs. Round 3 pick : TE Josh Oliver, San Jose State (B) This was clearly our biggest need. As for value, there's some risk, but he seems more than likely to be decent. Round 3 pick : LB Quincy Williams, Murray State (F) Let me preface this by saying that I don't just throw out F's. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first "F" I've given since the Jaguars drafted a punter in the third round. This pick is just a complete miss. Linebacker was very low on my list of needs at this draft spot. As for value, I can't find anyone who thought this guy would even be drafted. Even Quincy Williams admitted that he was looking at UDFA destinations. I don't see him as a future starter. I don't even see him high on our backup depth chart. He'll likely play special teams and little else. You don't draft that in the third round. He'll make the team because he was a third round pick, but if he had been a late round pick or an UDFA, he would be considered a "bubble" guy to even make the team. I could maybe understand taking a late round flyer or something on him, but third round? Wow. This was an awful, awful pick. (One awful isn't enough.) Round 5 pick : RB Ryquell Armstead, Temple (B-) It's a big need. You need two running backs in the NFL and I wasn't excited about our free agent acquisitions. Fournette has also shown to be very injury prone. The only question is value. Armstead seems like he'll be a decent backup, but not a lot of upside potential. Round 6 pick : QB Gardner Minshew, Washington State (C-) Quarterback is the most important position and I don't like our depth. That being said, did we get value? At best, he appears to be a career backup and I'm not sure he's even that. The odds seem to favor him not even making our 53 man roster. He's probably headed to our practice squad. Round 7 pick : DT Dontavius Russell, Auburn (B+) It may have gone under the radar for many people, but if you look at the depth chart, this was a big need. After our two starting defensive tackles, who do we have for depth? Yes, Campbell or Bryan will play there on passing downs, but what about running downs? Russell dropped because he's a run stuffing specialist, but that's exactly what we need. For a 7th rounder, you are happy if they make the team. Not only do I think he does that, but he has a great chance at getting snaps in the game day rotation. Solid pick for such a late position in the draft. |
