One can debate keeping him as a backup or not but had Bortles stayed on the roster he would have counted 21M against the cap, vs 16M of dead cap we have now even including the 2020 portion of the signing bonus he had on the books. (which we elected to have on the books this year rather than splitting it into 2020) Would have cost 5M more to keep him and would have actually made it harder to resign whoever.

I don't feel like investigating so I'll take your word for it, thanks for clearing that up. Bortles would still be a better backup, though, due to his availability, experience, and ability to throw with a little velocity.
